This may be a minor point, but the map of Michigan Territory 1805-1818 is not quite accurate. When the territory was formed in 1805, the southern boundary extended due east from the southernmost point of Lake Michigan. This included a strip of land in northern Indiana and Ohio, the Indiana portion of which was transferrred without incident, while the Ohio portion became the subject of the
Toledo War. The Indiana portion was included in the April 19, 1816 act authorizing the people of Indiana Territory to form a state, but the
Toledo Strip was disputed up until
1836. It'd be nice if the map could have some shading or something to reflect this.

Also, the map of Michigan Territory in 1836 is not quite right either. It shows the entire upper peninsula as part of the Wisconsin Territory, but the eastern portion of the U.P. was always part of Michigan Territory and was never part of Wisconsin Territory. Only the western U.P. was transferred to Michigan in compensation for the Toledo Strip.

Cool. As soon as I figure out how to do shading, or cross-hatching, or something, I'll fix 'em. :) In the meantime, do you want to edit the descriptions of the images to clarify the situation? Thanks B, you rock.

B, is this more correct?
Image:Michigan-territory-1836.png Let me know if or how I should tweak. Still have the other one on my list. Thanks! ~j
Strangely enough, it seems that the act of
April 20,
1836 that established Wisconsin Territory used the present day boundaries of the states (there were some minor dispute related to vagaries of which headwaters were meant, but it was more or less the present day boundaries). So for all practical purposes, the 1836 map Michigan Territory should be identical to the present map of the state (except for the Toledo Strip, which was only definitely settled in 1837 when Michigan was admitted as a state. I'm going to have to look into this more to determine when Michigan was "awarded" the western U.P.
older≠wiser 04:10, Dec 14, 2004 (UTC) P.S., I made a note on
Talk:Illinois Territory regarding the map there. BTW,
this link has a pretty good history of the land divisions of the Northwest Territory. (Sheepishly, I really should figure out how to do maps one of these days.)
