This article could be dispensed with, I think. What it says about Manilius is unnecessary in view of the Astronomica article, and what it says about Housman belongs, if anywhere, in the Housman article. Besides, it lacks citations, and is strangely written in places.

As to the "bafflement" about Housman abandoning Propertius for Manilius, Housman did in fact edit Propertius, but could not get his edition published. Ms was destroyed after his death as directed by him.

::More about the bafflement and Wilson's remark. People don't realise that Housman was interested in Propertius as an editorial task, not as literature, rather as Newton was interested in the gravitational pull of the planets, not their beauty in the night sky. Wilson was misguided, and his words could leave a false impression. I have altered the paragraph about Housman to take out some of the overheated writing and to try to correct the impression left by Wilson's comment.

What JS Phillimore did as editor illustrates the task. He went to Germany to verify the age of the oldest ms., which had been questioned, he was able to judge that the scribe had not been learned, and he took account of various marks on the ms., eg the letter q meaning obviously query, which occurs quite often. This and other work is described in his preface of 1901. It shows that Wilson did not know what he was talking about, really.
