There seems to be some controversy as to whether Mario is older or the two are twins in the section "Characteristics." I'm not sure as to why there is a debate between the two as being a twin does not stop you from being a younger brother.
This article doesn't say a thing about Luigi's Mansion or Mario is Missing!. Somebody really needs to note the games that he stars in, because I'm to lazy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kperfekt722 ( talk • contribs) 07:51, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
"In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Luigi became an esteemed author, writing a series of best-selling novels entitled Super Luigi, which tells the "true" story of his quest to save a princess from a distant land..."
This is not true. If you talk to Luigi after you beat the game, he says that he was interviewed about his adventure, and the Super Luigi books are "like a history book". This would imply that Luigi did not write the books himself. Hammer Bros. 01:00, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Um... how does that imply anything? There is NO implication that he didn't write the books himself if they were 'like a history book'. Even History books were written by someone you know, and there's no reason why it can't be a first-hand account. 124.168.28.9 ( talk) 08:24, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

One interesting thing to note would be the change in costume that Luigi, like Mario, has undergone since 1983. Luigi used to be Green and Grey/Brown depending on which version of Mario Bros. you played, and then in Super Mario Bros. they made him White and Green. After that, of course, his costume became as we know him now, but I figured it would be nice to note how he has changed thus far. -- Yahweh 05:50, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

Luigi Mario is definetely his full name. I removed the text "believed to be [Luigi Mario]", "generally accepted as [canon]" and "it has never been supported by Nintendo," because it has. I directly mailed (snail mail) Nintendo many years ago when I was younger asking that question in particular, and they replied back telling me Luigi and Mario's last names were, in fact, "Mario." -- Antoshi 07:17, 17 September 2005 (UTC) I highly doubt that
invalidate your letter. Nintendo of America has at times deviated from the source material. (Naming Peach "Toadstool" is a good example of this.) It's very possible that NoA did hold their surname to be Mario, but I'm not sure that anything even halfway canonical from Japan has ever claimed this. The article says that Miyamoto confirmed this, but there's no telling if that's true at all, which is why is should be mentioned with a grain of salt, as it were. Unless someone can confirm this, it's my opinion that the original text should be replaced, even if it's with a claim that NoA has, at least in the past, supported the Mario surname. (There's also a possibility that NoA retconned this.) -- J44xm 05:57, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
"It's possible that there may not be another source. However, the title "Mario Brothers" implies that they are brothers sharing the last name "Mario". For example, the Everly Brothers are Don Everly and Phil Everly. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everly_Brothers>"
Actually, in Super Mario 64 DS, a certain toad is impressed with Luigi and says' we'll have to start calling you the Luigi brothers soon.' They only call them Mario bros. because Mario does everything. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.142.130.34 ( talk • contribs) .
Actually, Mario and Luigi's last name is Serigali. If you see on G4, in Game Makers about Mario, you see that they say about Mario and Luigi's last name.
Still, I think that a letter from the creator of Luigi is completely indesputable; if Miyamoto says Luigi's last name is Mario, then it is. No two ways about it. Hammer Bros. 00:51, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Mario receives a letter which formally addresses him as "Mr. Mario" - although the game is not canonical with the main 'Mario' universe, I think we can agree that this instance along with the movie correlates towards the overall impression that Mario is their surname.

Terms like "Mario Brothers" and "Mr. Mario" ALSO apply if the duo doesn't HAVE a surname. As far as I'm aware, the only Mario series characters with canonical surnames are E. Gadd and the Koopalings. Donkey Kong has one, it's true, but since the entire Kong clan plus several other major characters in the Donkey Kong series (such as K. Rool) have surnames, I'm treating that as part of the Donkey Kong series. Moreover, last names seem to be entirely optional in most Nintendo franchises (such as Metroid and the Zelda series), and many of Nintendo's most recognizable characters are referred to by only a first name OR a last name. The Donkey Kong and Starfox characters generally have last names, but in the vast landscape of Nintendo properties, they're the exception rather than the rule. Due to that, there's no reason to assume that Mario and Luigi definitely have last names and that we merely need to figure out what those may be - they might not have last names at all, and "Mario Brothers" might simply refer to "Mario and his brother" without any thought of last names.

Right now the 'powers' section includes a statement that it's believed that Luigi has "control over gravity". Unless this if from some anime, instruction manual, or other source I'm unaware of, that seems like kind of a silly statement. Obviously, normal physics don't apply within the Mario universe. People routinely run up walls, walk on clouds, and jump twice their own height vertically -- plus, I'm guessing flying turtles would probably be somewhat less than aerodynamically sound in real life. So, does this assertion have a source? I am looking at the characteristics page, but it makes little sense. It says "Luigi is generally considered weaker and inferior to his brother, Mario, in every way except for his superior jumping ability", yet there is no proof to back this up. Hell, on almost all games, they have equal stats, and abilities nearly the same, other than Luigi's jumping abilities & lower traction. Not even the characters within the game gives any mention towards Luigi being considered weaker & inferior. And when I say inferior, I mean it ability-wise, not as the inferior brother overall.
It even says that they have equal to identical abilities on the "Powers & Abilities" section, so where do we get that from? I am a huge Luigi fan, and even I say that their are far too many opinions on that page. i don't care if there are negative views on the page, as long as they are somewhat backed up.
As for the topic of Luigi's age, it is perfectly possible to be the younger twin. So I can't see how it is contradictory. Simple796 ( talk) 05:46, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Luigi first appeared in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. as the character controlled by the second player, and retained this role in Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and other titles. The first game where he was available as a primary character was Super Mario Bros. 2.

Japanese nouns are mass nouns so a "s" will not be added to make them plural. In the infobox, the Japanese noun "anime" is inappropriately pluralized as "animes". This is incorrect and should changed to "anime" instead. 24.149.119.20 ( talk) 14:40, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

How come the Simple English Luigi article only has a picture of his emblem to represent him? I think it'd be a better article if an actual photo of him was on there. Mr. Lean 'n' Green ( talk) 20:58, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Luigi's first appearance was in the 1983 game Mario Bros. for the Game and Watch. This was released in March while the Mario Bros. arcade game was released in July. Who knows which game began development first, but the first publicly released game with Luigi was the Game and Watch game (which is not at all like the Arcade game). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Faladrin ( talk • contribs) 15:15, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

I noticed that on the "Year of Luigi" section, none of the game titles listed are italicized, which I think should be fixed. 74.134.13.42 ( talk) 17:14, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Luigi has a last name, it is Mario. Him and Mario Mario are the Super Mario Bros.
The following is a quote from the official Super Mario Bros movie (1993):
Sergeant Simon: Name.
Mario: Mario.
Sergeant Simon: Last name.
Mario: Mario.
Sergeant Simon: And you?
Luigi: Luigi.
Sergeant Simon: Luigi Luigi?
Luigi: No, Luigi Mario.
Sergeant Simon: Okay how many Marios are there between the two of you?
Luigi: Three: Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.

Luigi's first appearance was in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros.[7] as the character controlled by the second player. He retained this role in Wrecking Crew.
This is incorrect. Mario Bros. is a title for the Game & Watch released on March 14th, 1983 [1]. This game featured both Mario and Luigi as characters. The original Mario Bros. (arcade game) released on July 14th, 1983 [2]. Therefore, Luigi's first appearance was in Mario Bros. for the Game & Watch., which released exactly three months earlier. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.69.216.138 ( talk) 19:16, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
