I put a cleanup tag because I had great difficulty understanding this article. It's a bit messy for someone with no background; for instance, I have no idea what the campaigns were for (or rather against), where they took place, etc. One thing to make it clearer would be to put headers such as (for example):
Early days
Military career
Retirement
As I say, I have little knowledge of the matter so this is only a vague idea. Another thing, the
mayonnaise article states that he is credited for its invention, but no mention is made here.
