Presumably it follows the
Leica M7 (which suggests that they do not plan to design any more M-series film cameras, otherwise it would have been more sensible to call the M8 the Leica D8 or M7D or something similar). Alternatively, it could be text-speak for "mate", in which case the camera is the Leica Mate. That would imply that Leica has a sense of humour; I don't think they do. -
