It's worth noting that the concept of lattice confinement fusion, otherwise known as embedded fusion, has been around since 1992 ( http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF01294958), if not before. The NASA paper was just the most (recently) publicized version of this concept. The thesis written by J. D.
