Agree about "self-identify" is not accurate. However, there is recognition that the the Tai as a broader linguistic group which Tai Yai, Thai and Lao belong to. My problem is more with the geographic region mentioned which means that all ethnic groups within these geographic borders are Tai, which is inaccurate. Plus the Hainan origin is in dispute and not important to the current grouping. --

Definition
I'd sure like to see definitions of 'Tai' in a least some of the languages of the peoples to whom the term applies. My So Sethaputra Thai-English dictionary says it means 'boss'. I've seen other references saying it means 'big', 'big one', but don't have those to hand. I've never found an etymology for 'Thai'. --
