The name Kisumu does not mean poison as suggested by some. It actually means to get or look for food by means especially bartering. The original settlement was located at Otonglo market. A "gorogoro" of maize was sold for ten cents hence the name otonglo. (----)
I tend to disagree with this sentence about Kisumu
"Kisumu literally means "The poison". This was due to prevalence of Malaria mosquito. Draining of ground was used to eradicate malaria in the 30's "
I think think this phrase insinuates that the name kisumu originates from "sumu" the kiswahili word for poison. am strongly convinced that the name kisumu has its origin for the Luo (a local language)word "kisuma" or "sumo" which translates to batter-trade as the locals used to exchange goods at this gulf

There is a problem on this page; at the top the population of Kisumu is said to be 322,000, while under statistics at the bottom, the population is said to be 118,000. Which is it??
I think this statement —at the first paragraph of the article— is now outdated… Can someone else confirm? ― Eduardogobi ( talk) 20:18, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
Looking at the List of cities and towns in Kenya by population Kisumu is, per census 2019, the six largest city of Kenya, with a population of just below 400,000, about one tenth of the size of Nairobi. I changed the text accordingly. Teeschmid ( talk) 11:54, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
Removed some overlinking, fixed some sentence fragments and erroneous capitalization. May still need help with sentence mechanics; am out of time I can spend on this. Like all articles about cities, too much is made of pending real estate projects. I am uncertain if this is excessive, but would suggest a review to establish which if any were completed. As a complete outsider to the area, I think an expanded discussion of Lake Victoria boat traffic and its history would improve the article; just a suggestion but it is a point of differentiation from other African cities. There is also some repetition, which I did not tackle, but if I may make another suggestion, further discussion of precolonial history would be of greater interest than a third recitation of the names of sister cities.
