I reverted Mr. Steptoe's cause of death back to AIDS, which is what this article stated for many years until it was changed to "unknown causes" by user 68.96.41.148 on 18 March 2012. My rationale for this is that the cited reference, his New York Times obituary, clearly states that Mr. Steptoe died of AIDS. I also found numerous other similar citations (for example, in the New York Public Library's "Inventory of the John Lewis Steptoe Papers," at http://www.nypl.org/ead/3996), so I feel justified in restoring the earlier information.
