John FitzAlan was the 1st Earl of Arundel (not the 6th) of a new creation of the earldom after the d'Aubigny earldom was attainted. We do not number earls in order of how many people previously held the title, but rather by how many people have held the title in that particular creation of the title.
The FitzAlan earls must be numbered accordingly from this point: This John Arundel was 1st Earl of Arundel, his son John was 2nd Earl of Arundel, etc.
