I'm not really absolutely sure; I just quoted a source. What did you find to make you think he was born in Hackney? I mean, if you have evidence that he was, then change his birthplace, of course.
All I know from the index of births at
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl that a "John Ellis L Hunter" was born in Hackney in the first quarter of 1897, what I dont know is that it is the same person. The odds are for it as they are not birth registrations for any John Hunters in Tynemouth.

Certainly you have more info than I. If I were in your skin, I would make the same conclusions. Occam's Razor, and all that. Why not make the change?
