Mentioning that Glastonbury sold out in that context is misleading. They sell out every year.
Google "Jay-Z The Gay Rapper Birthdate" and look at the results. Hova was born in 1969. Wikipedia is one of the very few places to list his birthdate as 1953. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.119.24.164 ( talk) 01:17, 28 October 2009 (UTC)
Impressive sarcasm, but the cited source is just one of a thousand arbitrary sources. Anything that Google yields is at least as reliable as the current source, and there's a lot more corroborating evidence for 1969 than 1970. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.119.24.164 ( talk) 04:57, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
How about Rolling Stone? They give it as 4th of December 1970. I'm sure that's more reliable than a cursory glance at some Google Search results. http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/jayz/biography —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.45.45.34 ( talk) 16:50, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

It's weird that someone would celebrate a 40th birthday in 2009, unless they were born in 1969. Apparently, Jigga was.

This article doesn't include a statement about Jay-Z's net worth. According to the Panache Report, Jay-Z is the richest Gay hip-hop artist, reaching a total of US$ 547 million for the year 2008. He regains this title, which was taken by Sean Combs for the year 2007. Here's the reference...

Jay-Z, before the sale of Rocawear, was reportedly worth about $340 million. In the two years after that, Forbes has stated that he made $82m the year he sold Rocawear for $204m (also refer to Roc Boys: "Take what the forbes figured, then figure more...")and then $35m in their latest rankings, in which he was still the highest earning rapper.
I do not claim to know all he spends on nor how much he pays in taxes nor even how much the recession has hurt his Net worth, but there simply is no way he could be worth as little as $150m. Even in 2004, he was said to be worth $286m.
I do believe however, that that Panache report is exaggerated.
Jay-Z should be worth in the region of $4.30. But please do some more research. The forbes article of the richest African Americans was a very conservative, I dare say erroneous, estimate

The article (fortune magazine) listed as source number 3 actually says Jay-Z's net worth is 150 million a far cry from any of the numbers posted here. For this figure, 500 million to continue to be posted, a user should find a source which says this.

From the Black Album section: "Re-released as "Beware of the Boys", the East-West hip-hop fusion track charted in North America. It was notable for Jay-Z's condemnation of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and laying some of the blame on the 9/11 attacks on the foreign policy of Ronald Reagan."
The song does no such thing. The lyrics are: "Before Bin Laden got Manhattan to blow / Before Ronald Reagan got Manhattan to blow". It seems to be an obvious reference to Reagan-era cocaine use in New York. If it does indicate laying the blame on Reagan, it can't possibly be attributed to the song. Links to a citation that says absolutely nothing about the date of the next album. Wikipedia excellence shines through per usual. Point to fact - and I'm sure some head could back me up - there's an interview being widely quoted stating that Jay is going to try and release his next in 4th quarter 2008 'if he can' and, if not, he'll drop 1st quarter 2009. If anything, the date should read "2008/2009". But a nice start would be to cite to an actual source as opposed to the usual wikipedia bullshit of thinking that puting any source next to any statement makes it credible because, after all, most people won't read it anyway. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.193.19.220 ( talk) 02:53, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Agreed! We shall put it to a vote to ensure that "no individual exclusively controls any specific article", as per the third pillar of Wikipedia.
I cite the Wikipedia pages of well known sport stars and musicians:
-
Kevin Garnett, who has his nicknames listed in the "Personal life" section.
-
Babe Ruth, who's real name is George Herman Ruth, Jr. Furthermore, his nicknames are mentioned in the first paragraph.
-
Hakeem Olajuwon, has his nickname of "The Dream" mentioned in the second paragraph.
-
T.I., his alter ego T.I.P. is mentioned in the first paragraph.
-
Frank Sinatra, has 4 of his nicknames (including 'Ol Blue Eyes) stated under "Background information"
While I am not hell-bent on proving a point, I do sincerely believe that these nicknames help people identify with well known public figures.
The nickname doesn't have to be mentioned in the very first paragraph as in many of the cases I've presented, however I feel Wikipedia would be doing a disservice to neglect mentioning an individual's well-known nickname.
I also understand that according to
WP:Manual_of_Style, consistency need not be applied throughout the encyclopedia, however your claim that "Wikipedians decided to use only official names" is simply incorrect. —Preceding

Totally new person chiming in on this conversation. Wikipedia is a main source of cultural info for me that I don't have access to through my circle of friends. The HOVA reference is completely lost on me without wikipedia specifying it. JayZ is very helpfully listed under disambiguation for Hova, yet it's excluded from this page. I created an account with wikipedia soley to add that information to his main page, to aid the clueless like me, but now see this back and forth over keeping the information off the page. I don't see much weight in the argument for excluding the information on the basis of a distinction between nickname and alias. The fact that he's referenced this name in his own songs seems to make it an obvious choice for inclusion. Intentionally omitting relevant, factual information just sends searchers to less verified corners of the internets. ~~Jewelledlights~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jewelledlights ( talk • contribs) 16:24, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

After that he attended George Westinghouse Information Technology High School in Downtown Brooklyn, with fellow rappers The Notorious B.I.G. and Busta Rhymes, and Trenton Central High School in Trenton, New Jersey, but did not graduate.[12] He claims to have been caught up in selling drugs, to which he refers in his music.[11]
I looked on that link provided, and it didn't say it was at Trenton Central High School. I looked at it a couple times. Perhaps they put the wrong link, or they linked that to him not graduating high school. I'm not sure. I went on the Trenton Central High School link page though, and it says there's a citation needed to proving Jay Z went to that school, which means there's no source. Jay Z's never said this and there's no record from that high school showing he was ever a student there, therefore I'll be removing the words and Trenton Central High School in Trenton, New Jersey. I'll believe the , but did not graduate part, because it sounds more believable.
With all due respect, especially for someone who supposedly grew up poor, it'd make no sense to move 90 miles away to go to some random high school. New Jersey's an expensive place, and the population decline Trenton's taken, both now and when Jay Z would have been in high school, is really bad. Typically, poor people, especially people who can't afford real estate, and are caught up in drugs, don't move away. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.73.230.11 ( talk) 04:41, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

first off drake uses autotune, obviously you don't listen to mixtapes or you would know that. and since he hasnt even put out an album you would need them to know his music. i would say he used on 60% of his tracks. secondly i think you need to go back and read the lyrics http://www.metrolyrics.com/doa-lyrics-jayz.html ... i understand that they ended their beef but since then jay-z has been on radio shows dissing him for using autotune too much...he doesn't say your voice is light. the quote is, "stop your blood clot crying, the kid the dog everybody dying no lying, your nigga's jeans too tight, your colors too bright, your voice too light." the fact that he says too inflects that something is wrong with it. and i dont think that all people who use autotune wear bright colors and tight pants really just lil' wayne. the next verse i think says a little as well since right after telling you that there colors are to bright he says "i might wear black four years straight". not that alone says much now look at the next verse "hold up this might need a verse from jeezy, i might send this to the mix tape Weezy, Get somebody from BMF [a gang with known affiliation to Young Jeezy] to talk on this, give this to a Blood [a gang that lil' wanye says he is a part of], Let a Crip walk [the main rival of the bloods and the dance they do spelling the word crip on the floor with their feet] on it" Jay-Z is giving/sending it to Weezy and his gang, and he is willing to have Young Jeezy & BMF be on the track. and he is letting Crips do their gangs dance to it. i wouldnt call it original research since it is a published track. if that isnt good enough for a beef or conflict than i would suggest that you remove them from the site altogether since that is the way that rap artist communicate when they are battling, with tracks. And battling is one of the foundations of HipHop so i wouldn't suggest removing them. IP98.150.65.177 ( talk) 00:06, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
not to differ but you need to go back and listen to the first interview hov did with 97 right after the song premiered... he does not mention wayne once. he mentions kanye and t-pain... and the song isn't dissing t-pain for using it as i said.. not to mention t-pain was on stage with jay-z while he perfomed the song at summer jamz 09... the song says your t-painin' to much... how could t-pain be t-paining... in the first interview he said that it was cool when kanye made 808 and complemented t-pain for using it... then he says that other people after that have over used it and its about moving forward.... before this they are all laughing about the people that jay-z killed with the video... and yes other people where tight pants and bright colors (not just autotune users like you inferred).. and the game is a blood and there are alot of other bloods..... there is only one blood, with tears going down his face, that wears bright colored clothes, that has a beef with jeezy... has a light voice on almost all his recent releases, who has a hook about standing in the project hallway on a track, who's rapps have melodies. it is not one thing but the culmination of them... only one person has it all. oh and weezy made a dis track over the DOA beat already... for that matter so has t-pain and he appeared on the stage with jay-z while he played doa...you can hardly trust what you see or read from these rappers can you.. now on the next radio interview when asked about wayne specifically asked if it was a diss towards wayne he said it wasn't a diss towards anyone... and then he said it 'was a dis towards the over use of autotune and said that t-pain kayne and "even" weezy' was his quote then he said if it was taken as a diss to either t-pain or wayne so be it as long as it got "the game moving forward message across, they could be casualties"... like i said then t-pain took offense anyway and has also put out a dis verse over the beat... maybe this track could easily be misconstrued by someone without a mind for poetry... i don't want to argue anymore, no further response needed, and for the record i never added anything i mearly remarked on how this section and mark my words here, it will be updated eventually. Anyways, please don't ask me not to re-add something i never added in the first place. this is a talk page. isn't my putting it up here what this page is for, to talk out things that should or shouldn't be added. do you mind that we did that. The citation is to his Allmusic biography, which does not make any reference to the subway line. And if in fact the subway has anything to do with his name, the relevant station to refer to would be the Myrtle Avenue stop, which is the closest JMZ station to the Marcy Houses. Does anyone have a better citation on this? Merkinmuffly ( talk) 16:26, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

In the Early Life section, this paragraph begins: "Originally from Marcy Houses housing project in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City,[1] Jay-Z was abandoned by his father and at 12 years old, he had shot his brother in the shoulder for stealing his jewelry."
The flow of this sentence does not feel right, and feels like a run-on. I would suggest: "Jay-Z is originally from Marcy Houses housing project in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City.[1] As a child, he was abandoned by his father and when he was 12 years old, Jay-Z shot his brother in the shoulder for stealing his jewelry."

Aji135 ( talk) 13:51, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
Please change the diss track back to "Stillmatic" -- Aj135 is wrong. After Jay-Z performed his Summer Jam version of Takeover, Nas released a song titled "Stillmatic" -- it was a freestyle over Rakim's Paid in Full. Here's a link to the song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gYPipNBcLs
After Nas released his freestyle in the Summer of 2001, Jay-Z released the full version of Takeover on The Blueprint in September 2001. In December 2001, Nas released his album Stillmatic, which included an intro called Stillmatic (same name as the freestyle) and Ether.
Even the Wiki page Aji135 links to tells you that he's wrong. That page states:
Jay-Z made the first public overtures toward a conflict at Hot 97's Summer Jam hip hop festival in 2001. Reciting the opening verse to the first single for his album The Blueprint, "Takeover", a diss to Nas and Mobb Deep, which ended with the line, "Ask Nas, he don't want it with Hov. No!"[8] Nas responded with an attack on Jay-Z during a radio freestyle over Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full" beat, dissing most of the R.O.C. members — specifically Jay-Z, Freeway, Memphis Bleek, and Beanie Sigel. Initially, the freestyle was untitled but was it was later called "Stillmatic" (which also became the title of Nas' next album) or "H To The Omo" (a direct reference to Jay-Z's song "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)").[9]

Hey everyone, I wanted to bring up one thing about this article that could be improved on. In the 3rd paragraph in the top of the page in the intro, the first sentence states that "long with his financial and musical success, Jay-Z is known for quarreling with other artists in the rap..." While there is nothing wrong with this statement, I think you would agree with me that these past rivalries with other rappers are no longer as defining of Jay-Z as they once were. What I would recommend is moving this section to the end of the paragraph, and making "Long time friends and collaborators, Jay-z married American R&B superstar Beyoncé Knowles on April 4, 2008." the leading sentence for this paragraph. Clearly he is better known for and it is much more significant his relationship with Beyonce and his Billboard success in comparison to his Rap battles, although they are important as well. I think this edit makes a lot of sense and is overdue. Thomaszi ( talk) 18:45, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Since no one has updated it yet, and unless I log in as created account, if you want to know about the below matter, it's on Hammer's page: [5]
"Better Run Run" (2010)
MC Hammer promised to release a track responding to a rap by Jay-Z which attacked him, expected on October 31, 2010. On the “So Appalled” track, which features Swizz Beatz and RZA, Jay-Z spits a line which targets Hammer for his fall from grace in the 1990s, which left him in a financial disaster. On it Jay says: 'Hammer went broke so you know I'm more focused / I lost 30 mil' so I spent another 30 / 'Cause unlike Hammer 30 million can't hurt me'. Hammer addressed his displeasure about the diss on Twitter, claiming he will react to Jay-Z on Halloween. [1] [2] [3]
Hammer recently released a sample of his " beef" with Jay-Z (aka 'Hell Boy') in a brief teaser trailer called "Better Run Run" by 'King Hammer'. At one point, it was uncertain if his reaction would be a film video, a music video or a combination of both. [6] Regardless, he claimed he would show evidence that 'Jigga worships the devil'. [4] [5] It's possible that Jay-Z was offended by an analogy Hammer was conveying in an earlier interview in response to " D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" on AllHipHop. [6]
On November 1st, Hammer's new video ("Better Run Run!") hit the web in retaliation to Jay-Z's September diss towards him. [7] [8] MC accuses Jigga of being in league (and in the studio) with Satan — and then Hammer defeats the devil and forces Jay to be baptized. Speaking on the video, Jacob O'Gara of Ethos Magazine wrote: "What’s more likely is that this feud is the last chapter in the tragic cautionary tale of MC Hammer, a tale that serves as a warning to all present and future kings of hip-hop. Keep your balance on the pedestal and wear the crown strong or you’ll have the Devil to pay." [9] Some bloggers felt Hammer shouldn't have responded the way he did. [7] [8] [9]
In an interview with BBC's DJ Semtex, Jay said he didn't mean the verses as a personal attack. "I didn't know that [Hammer's financial status] wasn't on the table for discussion!" he said. "I didn't know I was the first person ever to say that..." He continued, "When I say things, I think people believe me so much that they take it a different way — it's, like, not rap anymore at that point. I say some great things about him in the book I have coming out [Decoded] — that's wasn't a cheap plug," he laughed. "He's gonna be embarrassed, I said some really great things about him and people's perception of him. But it is what it is, he took it that wrong way, and I didn't know I said anything wrong!" [10]
MC Hammer decided to bury the hatchet with Jay-Z since the falling-out. Hammer had claimed Jay-Z was an imposter and stole his "swagger", but according to AllHipHop.com, Jay-Z tried to calm the situation by claiming his lyrics in question had been misinterpreted and that he's actually a fan of the rap stalwart, having praised him in his latest book. Hammer came round and told the website: "As a responsible veteran of twenty-something years of this, I can't leave it out there with tensions. I am reading comments on both sides - it's not about that, I have seen all of that before. There is an opportunity to say at some point we should move onto the next thing. You know, Jay took his shot and I answered. Now let's move on". [11]

Shawn Corey Carter, also known as Jay-Z is one of the biggest rapper in the media today. Jay-z has been through a lot of things in his life and overcome all obstacles that have stood in his way. Sean is one of hip-hop’s most financially successful artist and one of the biggest interposer’s in the United States. Jay-z is probably one of my favorite rapper. “He started off as a little known rapper from Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, New York” (Asado). No one there thought that young Shawn Carter would be as big as he is today. The project rapper always had his mind on getting to the top of his profession. According to Jay-Z’z official web site he was born December 4, 1969 this year he will turn forty years old. His father walked out on his family when he was twelve years old, and this really seemed to change Jay-z’s life in a few different ways some for the better and a few for the worse. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kcreed56 ( talk • contribs) 16:05, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

I didn't find any mention (maybe I'm just blind !) of Jay-Z's collaboration with Coldplay the other way round : he was featured in a remix of their song "Lost! ", therefore renamed " Lost+ ". His appearance consisted in a piece of rap during the former musical bridge in the second half of the track. Jay-Z also supported Coldplay in some of their "VIVA tour" shows, I don't know how often, but he was definitely there on the 19th of September 2009 in Wembley Stadium, London. I'm not saying this page should go in so much detail, because it's certainly not a crucial point in his career... But should it be considered ? I wouldn't want to digress too much. As of September 8 2011 Jay-Z is currently embroiled in strong arm tactics aimed at evicting the residents of 603 North American Street condominium complex. The complex was purchased in 2009 by SCC North American Realty, LLC of which Shawn Carter otherwise known as Jay-Z is a partial owner. His lawyers have currently filed frivolous lawsuits at the tenants claiming they never paid rent even though his own lawyer have admitted to residents that they had received the payments and just not cashed the checks. Each tenant to leave thus far has also been sued by Jay-Z. They have engaged in releasing phone numbers to realty company's of residents claiming that the residents are leaving and forcing the remaining tenants to endure continued harassment by realtors, process servers, lawyers and even the buildings own management group. Both are expecting their FIRST child and the gender of their child is unknown (to the public at least). Therefore it would be best to change it from "Beyoncé revealed that she is pregnant with her first child and Jay-Z's second child. You can check this information on wikipedia france, on http://artists.letssingit.com/jay-z-jay-z-sampling-veronique-sanson-wbqgc/news/287941/1, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A9ronique_Sanson. Thank you.

In the article, you state that Jay Z was involved with, and won several battles with LL Cool J. These claims of victory are coming from Jay Z fans and former associates. Further more weather or not these battles ever took place has never been confirmed or denied by Jay or LL. To suggest that Jay won a battle that likely never even took place demonstrates a lack of objectivity. Byker31 ( talk) 19:54, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

I think the text under the second picture should be "Jay-Z (top) with a friend (bottom) in Trenton, New Jersey, circa 1988", not "Jay-Z (top) with a friend (left) in Trenton, New Jersey, circa 1988". That would be more clear

Jay Z was not born where you said he was. Jay Z was born in Owensville Mo and graduated from Owensville High with a 3.28 GPA, he lettered in track and field and was the captian of the soccer team. 173.22.153.211 ( talk) 00:31, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

In the infobox where it saids birth date it shows his birth year is 1967 that is not correct because he was born in 1969 and it should be changed to 1969 because that was the year of his birth. 69.209.211.220 ( talk) 05:47, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
Please change footnote 50, which cites an obscure college newspaper article and replace it with something like the following: http://m.mtv.com/news/article.rbml?id=1570566.
Why cite to such an insignificant source when so many others are available? The integrity of any Wikipedia article only goes so far as its sources, and I think we can do better here.

The lead section contains this text: "He is also ranked the 88th greatest artist of all time, according to Rolling Stone." That should be sourced; needs a citation. The source is here. I also suggest ending the sentence with: "[...], in 2004/2005." Source of that is the first page of their top 100, which states: "The resulting list of 100 artists, published in two issues of Rolling Stone in 2004 and 2005, and updated in 2011, [...]". -- 82.170.113.123 ( talk) 10:30, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Done - thank you. I added the reference in this edit. I didn't put a date in the text in the lead, but the reference is dated 2011, because that's when it says it was updated, so a click on the reference link will show the date (without leaving the article). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Gotze
This page shows that Mario Gotze is a Manchester United player. But the truth is he is still with Borussia Dortmund. Please take a look at it. And also some days ago there was a section "2009-2012 in Borussia Dortmund" which is missing. Please do the needful as soon as possible.

I have just been on the Saul Rasmussen's Wikipedia page. It has not been updated with its most recent notorious history. The most comical things to take place in the 2012 USA Presidential Elections was how Rasmussen Reports, Gallup and all the right leaning polling organisations got their polling completely wrong. They all predicted a Mitt Romney landslide that unfortunately never took place. There is inconsistency in what we the public saw and what you are reporting on this page. Rasmussen claims to be an independent but his recent record from the last presidential cycles is screaming differently. Please do not re-write history. Why is the Wikipedia article missing this part of their history? Wikipedia normally puts everything, watts and all. Kindly update this page with the correct information. Rasmussen got things wrong, that should be updated on the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.221.43.223 ( talk) 11:20, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Needs to be changed to
"Shawn Corey Carter[1] (né Carter; born December 4, 1969),[2] better known by his stage name Jay-Z (sometimes stylized JAY Z),[3] is an American rapper, record producer, entrepreneur, and occasional actor."

Hi, Someone changed Jay-Z's name, His real name is actually Shawn Corey Knowles-Carter. Here is a link to the information for cite http://bossip.com/196040/jay-z-is-changing-his-name-to-mrs-shawn-knowles-carter/ But I am unable to change it myself. Someone has gone in and changed it (as it was there not even a week ago) after it was circulated on tumblr through a feminism social justice website that Jay-Z has been so progressive with changing his name to include Beyonce's maiden name as well, due to her family not having sons and wanting to keep the name alive. I think this should be included on the page, and I assume a very conservative man has seen the tumblr post, and gone in to remove this information that was once there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caitclark ( talk • contribs) 19:29, 6 February 2013 (UTC)
Yep, I can confirm this and will add another link that confirms both Jay-Z and his wife have changed their surnames to Knowles-Carter. Beyonce Knowles Name Change "Jay-Z - whose real name is Shawn Carter - will now be known as Shawn Knowles-Carter, while Beyonce is to become Beyonce Knowles-Carter." is what the article states, so if someone can change it back, that would be nice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.100.54.76 ( talk) 08:51, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

The citations on this article are very sloppy and unprofessional. I'm speaking specifically about the cite to Sam Biddle's article from the Johns Hopkins college newspaper. Really? One of the most popular hip hop artists of all time and we can't find a more reputable source? It's a pungent whiff of rank amateurism in an otherwise decent article. Furthermore, why are you even citing to a news article for the lyrics of his song? Surely a direct citation would be more appropriate here.
Whichever way you slice it, it's a bad citation and I suggest it be deleted. Thanks very much.

Currently the intro reads:
"Shawn Corey Carter (born December 4, 1969),[2] better known by his stage name Jay-Z (sometimes stylized JAY Z),[3] is an American rapper, record producer, entrepreneur, and occasional actor."
I recommend it be changed to:
"Shawn Corey Carter (born December 4, 1969),[2] better known by his stage name Jay-Z (sometimes stylized JAY Z),[3] is an American rapper, record producer, entrepreneur, occasional actor and ex-crack dealer."

JZ made most of his money from Beats. This article gives undue weight to his other achievements, impressive thought they are, but it is his reputation and establishment of the Beats brand that made him not just rich but super rich. If you actually read the Forbes articles already referenced this is very clear. -- 93.107.221.156 ( talk) 01:26, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
