According to ScotlandsPeople, the only John W Kidd born in the date range was John William Kidd born 1882, died 1918 ('Marine Returns', i.e WWI related). It's very common to find players from this era bumped their age back a few years, but not really enough evidence at this point to prove its the same guy. My Litster files also say John W Kidd born 1884, but they have been wrong on a few others - the stats are very reliable, the personal info less so, but usually a good clue. Just a step for a hint if anyone else is looking into this fellow.

Crowsus: Think the problem is that he seems to have been just a John, not a John W., despite the sources. ENFA have plain John Kidd born 27 August 1884 in Glasgow, died 1927 (they don't give places or full dates of death). They also list additional clubs:
1902 Glasgow Ashfield, 1903 Maryhill, 1904 Third Lanark, 1905 Broxburn Shamrock, 1905 Third Lanark, 1905 Ayr Parkhouse, 1906 Third Lanark, 1906 Swindon Town, 1908 Third Lanark, 1910 St Johnstone.
I think the years are more "known to be there in" rather than explicit start or end dates. Swindon Town are confirmed
here.
In the 1911 Census, he was listed as John Kidd, professional footballer, married to Isabella with 2 children, Hugh Kidd and Jeanie Borland Kidd, all Glasgow born, living in
Smethwick with the family of his cousin George Humphrey. ScotlandsPeople shows a John Kidd birth registered 1884 in
Hutchesontown, and a John Kidd marrying Isabella Borland in 1906, also registered in Hutchesontown.
He definitely survived the war, because he was still playing for Brierley Hill Alliance into the 1920s, they gave him a presentation in 1922 for ten years' service. I can't find newspaper mention of his death (yet), but the death of a John Kidd aged 42 was
registered in Q3 of 1927 in
Stourbridge, which would fit with Brierley Hill. cheers,
