I noticed that there was a controversy in the pro-life/pro-choice debate about the recognition of abortion providers as human rights defenders. Perhaps this could be mentioned if a sufficent context were provided.

Human rights activist redirects here. Is there any difference between the two words and if so what is it? In general when a person is described as a human rights activists, would it be a inaccurate to add him/her as human rights defender? Mohamed CJ(talk) 15:49, 18 August 2012 (UTC)reply
I think that the expression "human rights activist" may popular under influence of the
activism, that seeks social change or lobbying. However "human rights denfender" is more proper for this Article because they are all persons or origanizations "to promote and protect peacefully human rights universally recognized", according to UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders described in this page. Therefore, the expression "human rights defender" is more proper than "human rights activist" because thay defend rights rathar than to change.
United Nations Special Rapporteur also uses "human rights defenders" (see also

I'm raising this again after a recent investigation relating to an article about a human rights defender (who calls himself thus). Google tells me that all major h.r. organisations seem to favour the term defender these days, based on recent pages, such as
this recent world summit and
the UN and
this US org called Freedom House and
the European Commissioner for Human Rights and
Amnesty. It looks as if the article was originally named Human rights defender, but got renamed (and pluralised for some reason?) and moved in 2014. I think this is worth a discussion about moving it back, as it looks as if defender has become the preferred term. (I'll be following up as per
WP:Move in a week or three...)

I agree completely.
Laterthanyouthink, did you manage to do something about this? Would be great!

I have just changed the name, given general agreement by editors above and in the sources.

Hello,
I would like to suggest moving the last two sections, namely Transnational Advocacy Networks and Human Rights and IT Information Technology and Human Rights Networked Advocacy, to another article, for example
/info/en/?search=Civil_society_campaign.
This is because they are more relevant to campaigning/advocacy techniques, rather than the concept of human rights defenders. I would suggest we instead add a section on threats/attacks/restrictions and persecution faced by HRDs (which is why they are supposed to be protected) and the reason why a declaration was necessary.
