While there were 11 or 12 firefighters killed in the 1872 fire, only 2 were members of the BFD, 1 was a volunteer, and others were firefighters from other departments - such as West Roxbury and Charlestown. Both those towns were eventually annexed to Boston but, until that time, maintained fire departments as independent towns.
