I copied this over from the main
Lagos article as the basis for a detailed history of Lagos. I am cleaning up the history on the main article page and shortening it, as befits an article on a large city. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, Lagos wasn't really a significant settlement until some time after the arrivel of the colonial powers. Before that, the
Yoruba were more of an inland people, with the most important settlements (Oyo, Ife, Ibadan, etc.) all being situated quite far from the coast. This is one of the reasons for the fact that it is difficult to find Yoruba and the Yoruba coast mentioned in the records of seafaring nations of Old Europe (the Portuguese, the Dutch, and then the English). A good source is Biobaku (ed.) (1973) Sources of Yoruba History, and especially Robin Law's articles therein. (Crossposted from the African regional noticeboard.) —

That's great - thanks for the information. Do you happen to have access to that book, btw?

(Sorry for the belated response.) Not at the moment (brought it back to the library some weeks ago). Maybe I'll take it up in the future, but right now I'm too busy with other things. —

Merge with Lagos
I believe this article should be merged somehow with the main article
Lagos. --

I disagree, there is enough information to warrant two separate articles. Of course,
Lagos should contain a summary of this article, but it's not a good idea to simply merge the two. Compare
Los Angeles and
History of Los Angeles. —

What is missing from the recently created
city timeline article? Please add relevant content. Contributions welcome. Thank you. --
