I'm not really too satisfied with the current link announcing the release date. I'm not going to delete it for the time being, but I do have some issues with it. The link says that "Activision has announced" this game and release date, but I can't find such an announcement anywhere on Activision's site. Furthermore, I can't find similar news items anywhere else, which seems really strange to me, especially since Orange Lounge Radio posted this news item yesterday. I guess I'm just saying that if I don't hear something a little more official in the next few days, I'm probably going to delete any info regarding the release date. If something does pop up, a better source should be used. -
Chickencha23:51, 20 March 2007 (UTC)reply
Okay, it's been about a month since that Orange Lounge Radio news item said that this game was going to be released June 1. We still haven't seen any official announcement from Activision or any reports from more well known news sources. In fact, I haven't been able to find any other sources that say anything about this at all that don't link back to the Orange Lounge Radio item. If this source can be defended in any way, I'd like to know.
Chickencha06:05, 16 April 2007 (UTC)reply
I tried to look around, but you're right, all roads lead back to OLR (though i note this was updated from their first January date). However, there's this Amazon.Ca item
[1] that sticks it on June 30, 07. However, I wouldn't go sourcing that just yet; Amazon.us doens't have a listing as well as other major gaming stores --
Masem06:30, 16 April 2007 (UTC)reply
Okay, this game now has it's own spot on GameFAQs, along with a release date: 4 June 2007. Not to discount the validity of their info, but I can't find any third party verification of this, or any publisher announcement etc ...

Possible Songs
Do we really need to have a citation stating who the song was originally by? If people want to know that, they can just browsethe article.
Demoman8719:07, 12 June 2007 (UTC)reply
Given how many times that we've had to revert changes to the GHII page because of one true cover song, this information is needed here so. That is, there will be editors that see the song name and immediately think that the wrong artist has been credited and will make the change. Adding the citation helps to let them understand that it's the cover and not the original song that's in play here. --
Masem19:22, 12 June 2007 (UTC)reply
I would like to see this deleted, it's only linked to one person's blog, there is no actual sources that back up this. I've looked all over the internet and can not find any information that shows there is going to be said game. --

I've added a cite that should cover it. There's proof of the game at

Chickencha20:27, 12 March 2007 (UTC)reply
Well, I was looking at it, and I realized that I have that issue. I can look and see if it's in the Rumor Mill section, or whether it was part of a larger article and get back to this page later today.
Tenraixtreme10:43, 2 May 2007 (UTC)reply
UPDATE: I looked through the Feb 2007 issue of EGM, and to no avail. I couldn't find it in the Rumor Mill, or anywhere else in the magazine. If someone has a scan or a page number, feel free to show it, but all sources point to an invisible article, so I don't know...
Tenraixtreme23:10, 2 May 2007 (UTC)reply
I erased those 3 extra songs put on the list. There's no credible evidence that those were ever announced to be in the game.
Demoman8715:25, 15 May 2007 (UTC)reply
Just keep doing that for any song or band that goes up there without a citation. I'm sure we'll hear of other bands/songs in the next couple of weeks as the release date gets closer, but anything else is speculation and should be deleted. --
Masem15:43, 15 May 2007 (UTC)reply
The statement that the song "Radar Love" is going to be in the game needs a citation. I'm going to add it to the list unless someone finds that it is not confirmed.
Demoman8718:53, 5 June 2007 (UTC)reply
The page has Harmonix listed as the developer but i have yet to find any article that states this. From what i can see it looks like this will be Neversoft's first shot at the franchise before they go on to work on GH3. Does anyone know of anything stating that Harmonix is workign on GH 80's?
DyloniusFunk23:34, 22 March 2007 (UTC)reply
We don't actually know for certain who the developer is, as there is no official information available on either this game or Neversoft's work on the Guitar Hero game series in general. The only thing that seems pretty certain is that Neversoft is working on some Guitar Hero game.
This is incorrect. Harmonix confirmed that they were developing this edition in addition to going forward with Rock Band. A standard Google News search will get any information you need for confirmation.

RFDeletion - Discussion
I know that the article seems pretty sketchy right now in that all information about it is second hand (eg Orange Lounge claims that an official Activision announcement set the date... but no other site has this announcement, they all link back to Orange Lounge). Plus, the only other unique news bit is that EGM announced this back several months ago.
I strongly recommend NOT deleting this article, and instead editing the front page text to be a non-POV'ish note on that this is a speculative title with no direct official confirmation from RO, Harmonix, or Activision (yeah, not easy to write but can be done); come a month from now, if no new details are known, then I suggest putting up an RFD again. Mostly because, if this is taken down before 80s edition is confirmed or denied, someone is going to put the article back up again. --
Masem15:27, 1 May 2007 (UTC)reply
That's completely fair and I agree. On a side note, I've come across more slight evidence for this game's existence, although once again not really anything that can really be cited:
[5] Notice how the release is pegged for June 4. But still nothing official from anyone. -
Chickencha16:46, 1 May 2007 (UTC)reply
Could we somehow include a paragraph on this? As in "not confirmed / speculative but many gaming organizations are reporting conflicting release dates" etc?
Off track a bit - the thing that disturbs me a bit (and makes me wonder whether this article should stand or not) is that they're keeping extremely quiet about this. We knew about GH2 many, many months in advance, confirmed by the publisher, and 2-3 months before release, we knew about a third of it's total playlist. This time, we've literally got nothing. They're either keeping very quiet about it, or someone's screwed up their reporting somewhere.

I am a Guitar Hero junkie, and I put the AFD tag up because this page has not significantly changed since JANUARY. No one can come up with a realistic date, or anything significant about the game. People will add unsubstantiated points, link it to personal blogs, or simply vandalize it. With no new information coming out in 4-5 months, I feel it is appropriate to delete this page until something is put up Harmonix, or Activision. Note, there is a Guitar Hero III page also....--
130.215.155.2120:29, 1 May 2007 (UTC)reply
Well, that's why I mentioned that we will be in a better shape to judge this in a month. I agree, no new news screams a bad rumor, but I'd rather not see us take the page apart, only to have to put it up a day later when validated news comes up. I think if we wait a month, and ask the same question again on June 1st, I'd be more comfortable deleting the page if no new info comes up despite the release being within that month from that day. --
Masem23:49, 1 May 2007 (UTC)reply
No sooner than we talk about it, but we get
this Joystiq blurb which does NOT confirm but nor denies the game is out, only that Gamefly and a Canadian gaming service list the game for July release. Again, this neither proves the game's coming out as it still lacks a rating that would be needed, but Gamefly's usually right when it comes to things. --
Masem11:20, 2 May 2007 (UTC)reply
Orange Lounge has rarely been wrong. One of the writers works for a software distributer, and he is almost always spot on with release dates. Also, Gamespot has the game's info as of right now on their page (see source list). Estimated release date is June 4th '07.
I removed the AFD tag, since I was the one that put it up, I think there are enough verifiable sources now to warrant this page, good job on the research guys!
And now there is official confirmation as well as a partial track list. This should finally put the debate to rest. As a side note, this is how the industry works a lot of the time. Companies refuse to officially confirm a title, even though they're the ones specifically talking about the title and referencing it. Harmonix did confirm months ago that they were the ones handling this as a last hurrah for their part in the series (as of now). That alone should have been sufficient confirmation.

Masters vs Covers
Probably way too early to tell, but I notice int he May 10th press release, that of the songs they list, the first two are "by" as opposed to "as made famous by". It could have been a bad copyedit before release, but I wonder if that means the first two are "masters", and both Twisted Sister and Flock of Seagulls helped to create them. It may be a detail we won't know for sure until closer to release.
--
Masem12:49, 10 May 2007 (UTC)reply
I'd say it's a safe bet. The wording of the other tracks ("as made famous by") is undoubtedly deliberate, to match the in-game description of covers ... it'd be very unusual IMO for them not to then just copy and paste it for the other two songs.
In other news, now that I've had my moment of weakness, I'm going to remove this from my watchlist. I'm attempting to pull a tomservo / Deus Ex 2 with this game here and go in blind until I'm actually playing the first notes of the song, in the hope that I suddenly start rocking out to Metallica or Dire Straits or something. Cheers,

The Activision press release says "Mental Health" will be in the game, but a recent 1UP.com preview mentions "Bang Your Head" instead. I'm guessing "Bang Your Head" will be the song used because it's more recent, but I guess it could have somehow been a mistake as well. I'm leaving the mention of both in the article right now.

It doesn't matter. Until such time as a
Reliable Source under Wikipedia policy provides confirmation, those songs don't belong in the playlist. It wouldn't be at all hard for someone to have dummied up that image in Photoshop.
I'm all for it if these are the real songs, there are some good picks if that's real. However, we have a problem with this page and with GH3 and with Rock Band that people are randomly adding their personal wishlist of songs, making it difficult to know what is absolutely confirmed through either official sources (HMX, RO, Activision, or Neversoft directly), or through top-tier gaming mags like 1up and Gamespot. That picture, lacking a source and being extremely hard to read, may likely encourage more people to put their own desired songs up because, "hey, if that got through, I can do something, right?".
You may be absolutely right, but at the present time it is speculation, and that cannot be put on WP pages. If someone gets a better picture of the back of the package and those are confirmed, they'll be added. --
Masem02:01, 10 June 2007 (UTC)reply
I'm with the guys who say that's not a reliable source. Besides, there's just a little more than a month until the game comes out. I'm pretty sure we can wait that long to add these songs to the article if they are, in fact, actually in the game. (Odds are we won't even have to wait until the game comes out to really find out for sure. Just be patient and wait for a good source.)
Chickencha03:13, 10 June 2007 (UTC)reply
Forum boards are generally NOT verifiable sources (see
WP:RSEX), particularly when they're not run by the company responsible (counter example, posts made by Epic staff in the Gears of War forums, which is run by Epic, is reliable). There's no way to identify the identity of that guy directly if it's a GameFAQs board posting. Again, I don't doubt these songs, but we have yet to pass a credibility test here. --

Can we update the total of confirmed songs from 26 to match the 30 shown in the list?
Krokus?
Any reason why Krokus is listed as the band for writing Ballroom Blitz and not
Sweet? Is it because Sweet did it in the 70s?
Most likely; the information from Activation says Krokus for this song which they did in 80-something, so it would fall into this category. --
Masem03:12, 14 June 2007 (UTC)reply
The song that is in the game is a cover of Krokus's cover of Sweet's version of Ballroom Blitz. This is a similar situation to the White Lion cover of Radar Love.

Updated Setlist
I updated the setlist based on snackbar-games.com's preview from last week. I was going to put "We Got The Beat" where there's an empty space in Amp Warmers, because it's an unbelievably easy song, but I couldn't be sure. Also, the same article references "Balls To The Wall" as a master track. They have the preview copy in hand, so I'm going to assume that they're accurate. I'm not sure if "unannounced song" is the best thing to put in. If someone has a better idea, go for it.
Skrutop21:03, 21 June 2007 (UTC)reply
I have to say I doubt this list. I have seen the gameplay video for Only A Lad, and if that is in the final set, then the entire list is screwed up. the song looks like it would be in the first two tiers. I just don't trust the authenticity of this list.

Semiprot / "this can't be the set list!"
I'm requesting semi protection on this page for a month; the amount of vandalism on the setlist pages is getting out of hand.
Also, for those saying that this can't be the set list because they feel a song is in the wrong difficulty bracket: I won't argue that some songs may seem out of place. However, using information from what appear to be two reputable sources, we have something to start from, but only until the game is in our hands can we confirm it. The current language used to say that this is the present setlist is fine; it is not necessary to call out that this is unlikely the final set list, as that is throwing a bias into the article. So don't get me wrong, I understand that songs may seem misplaced, but to call the set list order out on that right now is a POV/bias that we cannot include. --
Masem20:57, 22 June 2007 (UTC)reply
Can confirm from the actual game that "Ballroom Blitz" is in the 4th tier, and not even the encore for that tier. The final song is "Play With Me" by Extreme.
I've played through the game. The song list on the page is correct ("Ballroom Blitz" is a 4th tier, non-encore song). If the snackbar-games list is wrong, I've confirmed the list against the Sept 2007 "PSM" magazine review (by Tom Holoein, pgs 72-73). --
Masem05:09, 31 July 2007 (UTC)reply
Actually, the author of the article said both songs would be in there. Given how clueless mainstream reporters are, I'd doubt that this person knows what he's talking about.

Agreed .. and given that there's been no duplicate artist within any previous Harmonix game besides just Guitar Hero, I wouldn't think that Poison would get two songs for a rather popular era where there's many other worthy bands yet unrepresented. --
Masem15:02, 26 June 2007 (UTC)reply
I'm sure that
Tony Iommi,
Geezer Butler,
Bill Ward,
Randy Rhoads,
Rudy Sarzo,
Tommy Aldridge, and
Don Airey would dispute that. Yes, Ozzy was the principal creative force behind Sabbath, but saying that Sabbath and his touring band would qualify as duplicate artists is just nuts. For example, no disrespect meant to Iommi, who's an awesome guitarist, but he's not even worthy to carry Rhoads's jockstrap. (Again, no disrespect intended, it's just that Rhoads was so great that I'd say you could probably count the number of guitarists of his caliber in all of history on one hand.)

The "final" makes me wonder if they're not going to replace "I Want Candy" with anything else, but just integrate the Limozeen song into the setlist.

Just because Gamespy says the song title is "Ain't Nothin' But a Good Time", that makes it the official title? Gamespot shows it as "Nothin' but a Good Time" like I had it, and as it's shown on their "20 Years of Poison" CD. The BAND is the authority on their song titles, not some game site.
Sensei Le Roof02:28, 8 July 2007 (UTC)reply
I agree that it should likely be without the "ain't" but the best information we have now on the songs is with the "ain't". If when the game is out and the "ain't" isn't there, it can be removed, but until then, it's a verifiable title. --
Masem02:32, 8 July 2007 (UTC)reply
If it does turn out "ain't" is included in the title, we should put it the correct way and mark it with a note saying "Incorrectly referred to in the game as Ain't Nothin' But A Good Time", just like they did on the Guitar Hero page with Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Comin'", which is displayed in the game as "You Got Another Thing Comin'".
Moviemaniacx19:55, 11 July 2007 (UTC)reply
Certainly, that would be expected if the game uses a form of the title that is unexpected, just how we've noted that some of the covers in the game are covers of the original songs. --

EU cover
Given that the only apparent change on the cover is the change of rating, I don't think this qualifies as a need to have this cover present. This is contrast to the case for
Guitar Hero II where there is a big change between the PS2 and 360 version (characters, etc.). --
Masem00:33, 14 July 2007 (UTC)reply
I put the EU cover in to show the change of name in Europe, not the change of rating. I think it's pretty significiant that the 'encore' is being dropped for the PAL release. I vote reinsert the image until we decide whether or not the Amazon reference is all that's necessary.

Radar Love's artist
While
White Lion has the credited cover on the game itself, I think
Golden Earring deserves some kind of credit here for actually being the one to make the song famous, especially because the original is the most commonly still played version on the radio and elsewhere. Maybe some mention of the original artists of any of the songs that have cover artists listed would be informative.
Golden Earring is credited at the bottom of the page as the original artist, along with
Sweet being credited as the original artist of "
Ballroom Blitz". It should also be noted that the same thing is present in the first Guitar Hero. "
Higher Ground", originally done by Stevie Wonder, was credited (correctly) as being performed by the
Red Hot Chili Peppers, along with a similar note at the bottom citing Wonder as the original artist. If an artist did not perform the song featured in the actual game, I think a mention at the bottom of the page is enough.

Played it myself. The interface is exactly the same as Guitar Hero II except some of the colors have been altered. There are 8 characters. I believe they are the ones from the first game. Everyone is dresses for the occasion, single outfits only. The venues are the same as Guitar Hero II without the Vans Arena and Stone Henge. Obviously, there aren't any bonus songs. Same bonus guitars as GH2, and the skins appear to be the same. Game is overall relatively easy, compared to previous titles, and it only took a few hours to beat it on Expert, whereas it took me a while to beat GH2 on Expert. Songs are overall pretty decent. Leaves a little to be desired in terms of song selection, but with GH1, GH2, and GHE:Rt80s, I'm appeased until Rock Band and GH3 hit shelves. This is just my opinion. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong. :-)
21:01, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
The Vans arena is still in there but renamed "Rock for Safety Tour" and there is one guitar skin change which is for the Kramer; I could be wrong on that though.
Going to GA
Now that the game's out and the information on the page is relatively stable, I think we can get this cleaned up and readied for a GA. However, there's three major things we need for that:
We need a shot that demonstrates the '80s' makeover to the game. I'm thinking any shot involving Pandora will likely be best, but if you can locate a better one, we'll use that.
The History section needs a mention how this game was likely one to satisfy the "genre specific" versions of the game. I know it was in one of the other GH articles at some point.
Proper reference citations.
I think everything else is fine for a GA (with the question about leaving the soundtrack here or moving to another page -- I'm going to also ask about this at the WP:CVG general discussion), so this should be a no-brainer. --
Masem16:23, 3 August 2007 (UTC)reply
In Game Errors
I don't think it is enough for it's own section but I think it should be worth mentioning in the article that the School arena has an error in it. There's a banner on one wall to the right of the stage (facing it) that lists championship years (or something to that idea) and the most recent year it shows on it is 1992 which is clearly not part of the 80s.

GA on hold
Some considerations, some obligations:
songs list- if you can find a good source or two for those, you could prolly put them in the article without having to spin off to another list like GH II. At least summarize them- bands, who covered them, etc.
Reception: If you quote the scores and reference all the publications in the main body, why do you need the table? The only non-duplicate info is the aggregate, so keep that, I guess. Rm'd scores in the prose but left the comments of reviewers
Lead: read through
WP:LEAD if you haven't already; the lead is a tad too short. Since it's supposed to give a brief intro the the entire article, put in stuff about how it was received, how its mechanics weren't that different from Guitar Hero, etc. Done
Righto, then, I'll pass the sucker! Good luck on future improvements- it seems expansions often have a harder time at FAC than the full games.

Keep. The list was broken out for consistency between the GH articles, and is also appropriate for any game's soundtrack if of significant size. --
Masem04:35, 9 September 2007 (UTC)reply
Merge. The article for Guitar Hero II is huge, so it made sense to break off the giant songlist into its own article just to avoid clutter. The songlist for the Guitar Hero was fairly big, and the article about the game could be expanded upon. In the case of Rocks the 80s, all that can be said about the title could be said in a single article. There aren't many songs, there isn't much to say about the game. It is my understanding that soundtrack list articles are generally discouraged on Wikipedia (much as television series soundtrack lists are). While I would argue that the lists for GHI and GHII deserve pages, I can't say the same for GH:80s. On the topic of consistency, simply link to
Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s#Soundtrack in the footer template. That's consistent enough.
Pele Merengue00:04, 18 September 2007 (UTC)reply
Merge. If the concern is size, I believe we should keep in mind that there are some encyclopedia articles that are quite large. I think Wikipedia tends to err on the side of splitting too much. When you look at an article on an encyclopedia, you want to get all the information possible. I see no reason why Rocks the 80s, or any GH tracklist, should be separated.

By definition, controversy suggests an issue upon which reasonable people can come up with at least two different positions. Don't see how that applies here. The judge issued a summary judgement dismissing the Romantics' case, based on the fact that 1, they properly acquired a license to cover the song for the game, and 2, The Romantics no longer owned the copyright to the song anyway. Where's the controversy? Almost nobody though the suit had any merit, except for the band I suppose. I'm going to change the heading to Lawsuit as I don't see what's so controversial here. Someone can revert it if they disagree I suppose but I think this has decent justification.

The Wayback Machine/Internet Archive is perfectly acceptable for archival links. In case, all that needs to be done is add in, to the existing citation template "archiveurl = " and "archivedate = " entries for the archive URL and the date you accessed that archived page from the archive. I believe we assume the Archive will always be there so that you probably don't have to worry about recreating said content in a static form. --
