Q3: This article is biased (for/against), or (whitewashes/blames), (Floyd/police)!
A3: See our
neutral point of view policy. Complaints of bias must be accompanied by specific concerns or suggestions for change. Vague, general statements don't help.
Q4: Why is this article calling it a murder instead of a death/killing?
A4: As a person was formally convicted for murder in a court of law, the article uses the term "murder", in line with the community guidance at
WP:MURDERS.
Q5: Wasn't Floyd killed near a store called Cub Foods, not Cup Foods?
A5: The store is Cup Foods, and is not affiliated with the
Cub Foods store chain.
Q6: Why does the article use such a graphic photo? Isn't it in poor taste?
A6: The lead image was determined by the community in a
formal Request for Comment process. The RfC reached an "overwhelming consensus" that "...the image, despite it being traumatizing, should be kept per
WP:NOTCENSORED, as it is an appropriate representation of the topic."
Q7: Why was my request or comment removed?
A7: Because of the frequency of meritless and disruptive requests, any further requests to describe Floyd's murder using other terms (e.g. "death", "overdose") or to change the name of the article accordingly will be removed without consideration, unless the request complies with all relevant Wikipedia guidelines and essays, including
WP:Requested moves,
WP:Common name,
WP:Article titles,
WP:Naming conventions (violence and deaths), and
WP:Reliable sources. Anyone removing such requests should include a link to this FAQ in their edit summary.
Q8: Why do we not call the protests riots?
A8: Because most reliable sources call them protests, not riots.
Q9: Did he not die of a drug overdose?
A9: No, whilst fentanyl was a contributory factor, his death certificate lists his cause of death as "cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression".

The following is a closed discussion of a
requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a
move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: procedural close. The moratorium on moves I applied to
George Floyd protests is extended to subarticles. We are not going to have this same discussion from one article to the next. The consensus for "protests" versus "+riots" from the parent article is not a discussion that needs to happen in each and every one of the local articles, regardless of what the original title is set up as.

Irrelevant, as cities can hold vigils, have protests, riots, or any combination of it. City articles must be able to be named based on their individual reactions to the killing. This is a norm on Wikipedia, as with the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic city articles; many just included "2020" in their names as 2019 was not relevant.

Support Since
Ɱ has challenged this. A crude Google news search for results in the past 24 hours: riots+columbus
1130 results, protests+columbus
6700 results. Just for example, the feature picture in
this article for example is not of a riot, but clearly a protest. Why would this article be about only the subset of the protests that are riots when the non-riotous ones are also notable?

Totally improper as there have been nearly as many riots as protests. National Guard is in the city, emergencies declared, and an indefinite curfew. Over 100 businesses looted. To call it just protests is insensitive and inaccurate.
ɱ(talk)00:00, 1 June 2020 (UTC)reply
Strong oppose This is an undeniable simplification and undercutting of a violent, daily current event; like rewriting history. I have been writing this article from scratch; the riots have happened every night, with emergency declarations to clear the city. All roads out of downtown have been blocked, and COTA redirected its buses around the downtown. An indefinite curfew has been declared, and the Ohio National Guard are spread throughout downtown. Over 100 businesses vandalized, many completely sacked, not to mention all the public amenities and government buildings. The riots are incredibly significant, downtown has been a war zone. Omitting this from the article title shows a lack of information about the situation, and makes it appear far more mild than it has been.

User:Ɱ, please take a look under
Protest#Typology, you will find the type
Protest#Destructive that should be an eye-opener for you as to what can be included under protests. Look also under
Protest#Forms of protest, where you will find "Riot, melee, mob violence" and many other forms that can broaden your view of protests. True, these are WP articles but they do reflect the literature on protests. Knowing what protests can include, your efforts to include riots or unrest do not make sense. It is rooted in error.

Strong support I know it was just moved but I'll give my support for the record. The general phenomenon is called the "George Floyd protests" which includes actions peaceful and violent. Other related articles call themselves "George Floyd protests in [city name]", so there is already a norm.

Again, totally irrelevant as each city has different events in reaction to the killing. The Minneapolis article and other rioting cities need their titles to reflect the situation too, but that's not the issue here.
ɱ(talk)00:21, 1 June 2020 (UTC)reply
Support. I don't see any difference between these protests, which include violence and riots and whatnot but, in the reliable sources, are generalized under "protest" (yes, the sources for the article--and thank you
DIYeditor for doing that legwork), and all the others. There is nothing special about Columbus that makes it different from the Twin Cities where we had that discussion too. The real question, by the way, is why we are creating all these articles on these protests in various locations in direct contradiction of
WP:NOTNEWS. We still have dozens of "Occupy" articles to merge.

Otherstuffexists is not a valid argument. Minneapolis and other rioting cities should reflect that it's far past just protests. And this is the most signicant event in Columbus in decades, the worst protests/riots anyone here has seen. There are RSs saying this and more.
ɱ(talk)00:24, 1 June 2020 (UTC)reply
Completely not how we operate here. Have you never been in a page move discussion? Do not move until the discussion ends, as noted on the article's RM notice. I'm going to ask administrators to revert your improper action.
ɱ(talk)00:37, 1 June 2020 (UTC)reply
I just saw this, I'm on mobile. Please see Drmies' talk page. Gidonb, thank you for opening the RM instead of the immediate move. Will write more in full here late tonight when I return home.
ɱ(talk)23:22, 31 May 2020 (UTC)reply
National status is irrelevant to the situation in any unique city. Please see Drmies' talk page and read the sources. There are riots and not listing that in the title is incredibly misleading.
ɱ(talk)23:46, 31 May 2020 (UTC)reply
I should note the article's photos misrepresent this likely to all the commentators here. View videos, eg on Facebook livestreams, there have been violent riots each night. Most of the photographers here haven't been willing to experience that level of risk, creating a misleading idea of the severity of the situation.

Suggest removing the term “defamatory” in reference to “ACAB”. The article for ACAB does not use the term defamatory, and calling the slogan defamatory implies it's false. I think that's a value judgement outside of the scope of this article. (Forgive me for not knowing what Wikipedia: pages to cite here ;) )
