Several editors have recently listed Gao and other cities as now belonging to Azawad rather than Mali. While I understand where they're coming from, the international community continues to view these as Malian cities, and the news coverage I've seen follows their lead: [1], for example. Once the news begins to recognize Azawad as a legitimate state, I agree that we should follow their lead, but until then, it seems to me that we need to follow reliable sources in our coverage, as always. Finally it is about what is more important, diplomatic recognition by other countries or political control on the ground. What are the precedent on Wikipedia on non recognized but sovereign states and on internationally recognized but occupied or non sovereign states?-- Remzone ( talk) 08:08, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
This page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tskhinvali seems very relevent to the situation to me.-- Remzone ( talk) 08:19, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
South Ossetia is only recognized by Russia. The big majority of the diplomatic points of views are that it is Georgia. But of course it is not, since it is not at all in control of Georgia and they lost two wars about South Ossetia. This is the case than here. -- Remzone ( talk) 10:28, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
Many news outlets are reporting that the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) has routed the MNLA out of Gao. Someone with more comprehensive knowledge should write this up in the article. Inkan1969 ( talk) 01:08, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
