Pretty sure he was badly wounded at Mons... after that it's not 100% clear what happened to him. This article used to say "committed suicide in US custody" but I can't find a ref for that. Georges Bernage says he might have been "shot", but by whom and under what circumstances it doesn't say. Traces of War says "suicide", but doesn't say under what circumstances... Some forum or other (not usable ofc) says that there are multiple accounts... assuming that he wasn't shot by his own men, I guess the possibilities are
Wounded, then killed himself
Wounded, then captured, then killed himself
Wounded, then shot on sight by the Americans
Wounded, then captured, then shot by the Americans
