FIT Jensen Beach was a very profitable campus. I was on the faculty there at the time and the administration publicly announced the closing of the campus on the day of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and with the stroke of a pen the lives of the faculty, staff, and students would never be the same. The administration’s plan was to sell the property to developers for luxury waterfront condos and use the money to fund pensions for retiring faculty. But the plan backfired. The residents and town of Jensen Beach and I believe Ralph Evinrude’s family (his wife’s Outrigger Resort was next door) fought the zoning change and they were unable to proceed with their plans. To my knowledge it has since been a church campus and a drug rehab facility. At the time of the closure FIT Jensen Beach programs were recognized world wide and the people responsible for the closure will surely smoke a turd in purgatory. FIT Jensen Beach from 1979 to 1981. Hurricane David had ripped up the dormitories and they sheltered the students in a Motel on US1 in Stuart for the fall 1979 quarter while they repaired the Dorms. It was a most interesting environment with the various types of studies ranging from Underwater Technology to Aquaculture.
