Why is "Fixed-odds" hyphenated? What is the source of this material or is it the writer's general knowledge? Paul Beardsell 23:13, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
It seems someone has merged the 3 articles that used to be Decimal odds, Moneyline odds and Fractional odds but left out the references, I'm adding the reference back in. -- 195.157.84.178 13:54, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
This article appears to be more about betting issues then gambling ones. So unless there are serious objections, I'll rename the article to Fixed-odds betting. Vegaswikian 02:38, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
It's not clear on this page under Moneyline Odds what is meant by the term "better than even" and "worse than even." Can someone please clarify that here and possibly elsewhere on linked pages? I would assume "better than even" means that you will likely win, but the payout will be less than one-for-one (i.e., receive $2 for every $1 bet - the $1 amount of your original bet plus a $1 payout). And "worse than even" odds means that you will likely lose, but payout if you win will be greater than one-for-one. For beginners, gambling and odds-making has difficult nuances and semantics. Edcarrochio 20:10, 3 June 2007 (UTC) Other way around. But could someone explain this:
Why can it not be quoted as a positive figure? $25 is a positive figure. 121.72.68.56 12:06, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
I've removed the Copyedit tag and replaced it with an Essay tag. It seems to me that the article doesn't just need rewriting for clarity, but rather the article as a whole seems like one person's advice and experience. In particular there are statements that read to my mind like POV, such as a reference to "the fallacy of loss-aversion" (surely it's not necessarily a fallacy to be averse to losing your money?). It may be that these statements aren't POV (the loss-aversion fallacy may be a known concept in gaming theory for all I know), in which case they're simply badly enough written to sound like it. The Guild of Copy Editors will be glad to return and give the article a polish, but at this stage it probably needs a ground-up rewrite with citations, wikification and NPOV. There is no citation for the "best of it" / "worst of it" jargon that takes up a disproportionate amount of space in this article. I have never heard of this and neither have my friends, though, granted, we are more engineers/mathematicians than gamblers. Is this actually a common phrase in gambling? Or, as I suspect, is it some phrase of some locality that should be at best clarified and, perhaps more sensibly, removed entirely. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.26.12.110 ( talk) 08:42, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
It appears that the main reason for the existence of this article is to distinguish between betting at fixed odds and parimutuel betting. However, most of the material in the article would seem to be better placed in the article odds. Does anyone have any thoughts on either a.) revising the article so it is just about the distinction between fixed odds and parimutuel, with links to the main odds article for more information, or b.) merging this article completely into bookmaker and odds?
