Can anyone throw light on "campground" in the lyrics of Deep River.
I've been wondering about that too. I heard this sung at a recent memorial service, and kept expecting to hear, "I want to cross over into Canaan" (that is, the Promised Land across the Jordan River). Is "campground" an error, either as misunderstood by the author(s) of the lyrics, or by some later transcriber? Is it possible that this spiritual was sung by escaping slaves on the
trail to freedom, and refers to a literal campground while alluding to Canaan? That last is just speculation, but I'd like to know.
