In multiple KTN News Kenya videos online, it's pronounced with three syllables, like tuh-roy-TEECH.
I have a question regarding the pronunciation given for "Moi" in this article. It appears whoever added it thinks it should be pronounced in a way that rhymes with "Bowie" (as in David) -- MOH-ee -- when it should rhyme with "toy". In every video I watched from multiple African news agencies, it sounds like MOY.

Respect for historical backgrounds and for language or culture does not mean, in the Kenya of today and the years to come, that everyay lives should be flavoured by tribal considerations. All of us now, first and foremost, are Kenyans. Traditions and values associated with particular communities only make sense within the framework of a Kenyn nationality and when applied to the development and welfare of our nationhood.
Leadership is a priceless asset; it cannot be bought.
Peace, love and unity are the pillars of stability.
So, peace, love and unity are the principles which uphold the faith in the future of a prosperous and God-fearing Kenya. That is the faith and hope of Nyayo.
Women are the backbone of the Kenyan economy.
In this increasingly interdependent world we must not let minor differences of an ideological nature prevent us from embarking upon the vital programme of improving the transport and communication links necessary for the development of our continent.
All living humans, and those of posterity, are entitled to peace as a birthright.
Let me make one thing clear. It is my most positive wish that the whole open atmosphere of freedom in Kenya should be sustained. But we cannot, and will not, tolerate any calculated forces of division or disruption. Anyone setting out to abuse these freedoms we provide is theatening our national integrity, and the defence of such integrity is a duty which, above all else, my Government will always discharge.
Real peace must come from unity nourished by love, though justice, equity and participatory brotherhood in nation-building and the development process. In contrast, a semblance of peace is really a species of violence, an affront to Christian precepts and a travesty of human rights.
Peace, love and unity are not vague philoophies! They are the practical foundations of country-wide development. Where there is peace, then there is stability, and only in the arena of will you find investments, enterprise and progress. Where there is love then there is trust, and readiness to work with us, learn from others, and contribute to others in the cause of nationhood. Where there is unity, there is strength rooted in understanding of our common purpose, common loyalties, and mutual dependance.
We cherish peace because we recognise peace to be the basis of our development. We believe that it is through the collective effort of all Kenyans irrespective of our religious beliefs and through the grace of God that we have been able to enjoy peace during the past years of our independence. It is our desire that there should be permanent and everlasting peace in all part of the world.
The kind of peace which I believe we should be seeking is peace that is not guaranteed by excessive armaments. In fact, armaments can never guarantee peace. What they do is to istitutionalize tensions and fears of incalculable human disasters in case of accidents or political and military miscalculations. What we should be seeking is peace built on equality, justice and prosperity in all parts of the world.
The world is littered with pockets of turmoil originating from man's lack of love for one another. Lack of love is the root-cause of such evils as the widespread discrimination based on material wealth, oppresion of the poorest of the would and racial discrimination.
The strength and maturity of a nation cannot be measured by achievement alone. A nation is, first and foremost, its culture, and its vision. When the people and their institutions are strong and mature, when a nation's vision is clear, when a natoin's philosophy is dependable, that nation is strong. That nation is mature.
I have always stressed that human life is too important to be made the object of political games. Human life must be protected and preserved at all costs. If killings were to continue at such scale, then, even those people struggling for power will eventually have nobody to rule.
It is underdevelopment and poverty that are forcing citizens in the Third World to overgraze the land, cut down the tree, plough thin and unproductive soils, pollute and misuse water supplies. I believe that the day the developed countries will cease to politicize contributions, the United Nations will be able to succeed in fulfilling its objectives for the benefits of mankind. Let us show more concern for our environment beyond political divisions and ideologies.
The days of empty rhetoric are long gone. What Kenya needs is pragmatic and development-conscious leadership. Leaders hould concern themelves more with improving the well-being of our people by initiating tangible development programmes instead of engaging in politics of hate.
I can read in his CV (at Moi institute or at statehousekenya.go.ke) that he was born as "Toroitich ... Moi" and that he was baptized at the age of 12 and became thus "Daniel T. ... Moi". What is not clear is: what does "arap" mean and why is it sometimes written with a small "a" and sometimes with "A" ? When adressed short, he is sometimes called "Arap Moi" and sometimes only "Moi" - why ? --
