My source for any adult sane Jew performing shechitah is classical codes of Jewish law like Shulchan Aruch; I'll hopefully look up the exact chapter and include that ref in the next few days.
The shochet is not required to say anything before the individual slaughter of each animal, but I believe they are required to say a prayer when entering the slaughterhouse. Also the article states that "The most prevalent consensus among Muslim scholars is that in order to be dhabiĥa halal, the fish must have scales." This is incorrect - and is only the opinion of Shi'a scholars The four Sunni madhabs allow the consumption of fish without scales. BhaiSaab talk 02:12, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
The article says one stroke is needed for both Muslim and Jewish slaughterings. In fact, for shekhitah, if the shekhitah is accomplished with one stroke, the animal is treiffe as it is proof of Pressing - one of the five forbidden actions. In shekhitah the knife must be drawn back and forth across the throat without pausing until the majority of the food pipe and windpipe are cut through. Technically, if one has an enormously skilled shokhet, no artiery or veign is ever required to be cut in the throat. 88.154.158.42 21:31, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
I have the opposite opinion. One stroke from an extremely well honed knife by a trained shochet (Jewish) should immediately cause a drop in blood pressure and unconciousness in the animal. The trachea, esophagus, carotid artery and jugular vein MUST be severed. There is a properly sized knife for each animal, small for a chicken, larger for a cow. The rabbi who is qualified as for shechita studies animal anatomy and pathology. My information comes from the chabad.org website. Halal, on the other hand, does not seem to require training or certification. Animals are slain for holidays by the men in the family. This is done outdoors and the blood runs down the street. In the videos from Gaza (YouTube on the festival of Eid), the men saw through the necks of the animals with many cuts. Based on the very much that I know about Kashrut, and the far less that I know about Halal, this is a wonderfully accurate article. I'd like to suggest something that could be added, though. The article says that according to both Kashrut and Halal, the blood must drain from the animal after slaughter. According to Kashrut, though, there is an additional step: after the hide is removed (and after the meat is cut up, I think) there is an additional procedure to remove the remaining blood. (This procedure involves several steps, but can be summarized by saying that the meat is rinsed with water, covered with salt to extract the blood, and then rinsed again.) If there is no comparable procedure in Halal, this should be mentioned as a difference. Suppose a tiny amount of alcohol is present in a food, so little that the final product is not intoxicating in any way. Is this halal or haram? I have heard that it is haram, and if so, it might be worth mentioning in the article that many flavorings and colors are made with alcohol, and would therefore render the final manufactured product as haram. This would be another reason for those who observe halal to consider kashrut as insufficient. -- Keeves 14:01, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
A recent Fatwa by Shaich Al-Qardawi which i find very rational. he says that only added alcohol on food is Haram. but if very little amounts of Alcohol are formed naturally then it doesnt make the food Haram. Isoman00 ( talk) 19:08, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

I understand Keeves' point about too much detail. The trick here is, are we talking about theoretical kashrut vs. halal, or practical kashrut vs. halal? ("More-strict keepers of kosher/halal will only eat at restaurants certified as such" -- that's practical. "If an insane person performed ritual slaughter" - that's theoretical.) Point in case: the bugs/grasshoppers issue. I just don't want people reading this article and walking away thinking that most kosher-observant Jews eat grasshoppers! A different note, but still on the subject of insects - Under "Substance classification - Similarities" is the part on insects, which at the moment reads "Almost all insects are not kosher. The few kosher insects are specific types of locusts and grasshoppers (see Kosher locust) which are not eaten today in most communities, since it is unknown which species is permitted (the exception being the Yemenite Jews, who claim to have preserved this knowledge)". This doesn't mention Halal at all. How is Kosher and Halal similar when it comes to insects? (I can't answer that question, I'm a reader new to this subject). Yes, kosher fish must have "scales", but how are "scales" defined? Classical Jewish sources say the fish must have, as an adult, scales that can easily be scraped off with a blade. By the time a swordfish, reaches maturity, its scales have sunk into its skin and aren't easily removed. Consequently, swordfish (at any stage of development) is not kosher. Peelable scales are the requirement. "Adult" is absent from any talmudic discussion or the restatement of the oral law found in the mishneh torah and other legal codes. swordfish have juvenile scales, and thus their kashruth is controversial. by no means are the conclusory remarks above accurate in their dismissal of a well-known custom of eating swordfish among sephardic jews for centuries. That this is no longer common or well-known has more to do with modern-day ignorance of the debate than any clear legal issue. alex schindler

kashruth also demands waiting a fixed period after meat before dairy can be consumed, generally about six hours, though some communities waited only three or less.

Not all kashrut laws are found in Leviticus. The rule against Jews eating the sciatic nerve is in Genesis, see http://www.torah.org/learning/halacha-overview/chapter28.html. Further, kashrut is also rooted in the oral talmud. The article states the camel is halal but not kosher, implying that it has cloven hooves but does not chews cud. However, Leviticus 11 states eating camel is forbidden because "the camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof". What gives? Ratfox ( talk) 15:58, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

One of my Imams (Islamic religious leaders) had a meeting with another well-respected Imam over Kosher burgers! Kosher is allowed for Muslims, but I don't know about vice versa... I am quite surprised there is no mention of not mixing Dairy and Meat products under Islamic law anywhere here or in the Halal article. I have always been taught not to eat meat and milk product at the same by my Muslim grandfather, and wait at least two hours between eating the two, and told off when I broke that. I am no expert in Islamic law, but I am guessing that must have bearing in Islam as my grandfather was quite observant and that was what I was always taught. I am not quite sure what Islamic school he followed, but he was Sunni. I just thought this might be the perfect article for this request for more information on this. Thanks all. Surely if Halal is a subset of Kosher then all Halal is Kosher but not all Kosher is Halal - this would suggest that Jews can eat Halal (safe in the knowledge that it is Kosher) but Muslims cannot eat Kosher (because not all Kosher is Halal). I am going to revert the edit of 23:50, 20 April 2014 because it is imo clearly wrong (as is the above statement from 23:44). An analogous situation: "cats" is a subset of "mammals" because all cats are mammals but not all mammals are cats (see e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dcresti). Similarly, "kosher" is a subset of "halal" because (at least we are told that) all kosher is halal (otherwise Muslims would not generally eat Kosher food) but not all halal is kosher. The requirements to belong to a set are less exacting than those of a subset of that set.

The article in the Differences section that Halal-slaughtered meat has no restrictions on the parts permitted to be eaten. It goes on to say that the exception blood, bones, fat not attached to meat, and wounded parts. The Ayat are very clear in stating that the forbidden parts of a live slaughtered animal are the flesh of swine, and blood (of any animal). There's no mention of fat or wounded parts.
Here are some Ayat that deal with the forbidden meat: Al-Baqarah 2:173[ Quran 2:173, Al-Mā'idah 5:3[ Quran 5:3, Al-'An`ām 6:145[ Quran 6:145, An-Naĥl 16:115 [ Quran 16:115. They all say the only forbidden (they literally say either "prohibited" or "only forbidden") parts are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah.
I also have never read a part of Sunnah that states fat, bones or wounded parts are forbidden (I'm a Muslim, but not a scholar). Cooking fat, and/or using bone to make a broth was a common meal during the early days of Islam and later (and still is in parts of the Arab world, but I don't have a reference, it's observational and cultural knowledge) as meat wasn't as readily available as today and was an expensive item considered to be the foodstuff of the rich.
The article should be either cited with a credible source, or the part about fat, bone and wounded parts be removed. -- Abderrahman ( talk) 16:22, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

The article states
"It is estimated that 70 percent of the food ingredients produced and 40–50 percent of foods sold in the United States are kosher."
But doesn't this number include products such as apples, tomatoes and other staples that would naturally be kosher unless they've explicitly been tampered with? I think it sounds misleading. 惑乱 Wakuran ( talk) 11:01, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
