I've removed the sentence "It is the only provincial public holiday" from the article. I think St-Jean Baptiste day in Quebec is also a provincial public holiday, and I believe the Western provinces have a holiday specific to them too (at a different time of year). 74.59.88.113 20:06, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
I removed this line, because it does not belong on the page: This is a false statement. Civic Holiday is not a paid public holiday. Family Day in February on the other hand is. (at least where it was on the page). 209.148.134.188 ( talk) 23:57, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm in London, Ontario, and we call it Civic Holiday... I think all of Ontario does. These city specific nicknames seem to be just that. Our calendars are printed with "Civic Holiday" written on them. Upsidedown i ( talk) 03:35, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

The challenge with providing a reference for the city-specific nicknames is finding a single reference that covers most or all of the ones cited here. It's relatively simple to document them one by one as most are probably enacted by municipal by-law or proclamation, and as such would be documented in each city's council minutes. For example, the amalgamated City of Ottawa finally made the Colonel By Day official for the entire city by a motion passed on July 9, 2010 City of Ottawa Council minutes. But to document each city's specific name in this fashion would not only be tedious but would make the list of references unnecessarily cluttered. BTW, I agree with the previous comment. I'm new to Ottawa, but several long-time residents have told me they have never heard of "Colonel By Day." Bartleby62 ( talk)
Contrived sounds a little POV to me. Maybe it could be supported with a source, if it is to stand?-- 24.85.68.231 ( talk) 19:12, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
I was trying to find British Columbia Day, but was redirected here. I can't see why all the different holiday's are grouped here, since they are all provincial or locally declared holidays and a national holiday. It is also lacking history and background on most of them, outside of Alberta and Ontario. In BC, it is never mentioned as civic holiday, and can lead to confusion. I don't know the rational around this, so I'll wait on an answer. Cheers — Preceding unsigned comment added by 23.16.8.23 ( talk) 22:56, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
