On 28 October, Techmobowl made very substantial changes to this article. Since then two users have tried to revert back to the way the article was previously, and each time the revert has been undone. To prevent this from turning into some kind of revert war, I suggest that any changes, corrections and additions to the article be discussed here on the talk page, and then we amend the article in a sensible way. I think the article needs expansion in a number of regards. Firstly, there is almost no detail regarding his personal life. Secondly, there needs to be more on the events in his baseball career - the Rusie trade in particular - and his achievements. Thirdly, there needs to be some attempt to place his career in the context of baseball history. What do you think? Salim555 12:58, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Nice to see an article with citations to back it up, good work. Mglovesfun 23:46, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
To whoever keeps changing it... you may be right as rain that 1878 is correct, but the publicly available sources all say 1880. If you've got evidence that it's 1878, you need to present it. Claiming that some obscure document at Bucknell says so, is not sufficient, because for all we know, you could be making this up. It has to be verifiable. So if they have such info available on a website, then you should include the URL to it. If not, maybe they could make you a photostat of the relevant documents, and you could post them here. Someone posted a new photo and said they thought it was a better photo. To me, it makes Mathewson looks like a hayseed, which he most definitely was not. The previous photo shows less facial detail but also shows him in uniform. I'm thinking of putting the old picture back. Any other opinions? And in either case, the old photo could also be used in the article. Baseball Bugs 02:21, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
I removed the following sentence: "Along with his brother Henry Mathewson, he holds the major league record for combined wins by brothers playing for the same team: Christy 373, Henry 0." This makes no sense to me. Henry was on the Giants in 1906 and 1907, so the most possible wins the brother-teammates can have is 46, Christy's win totals for those years (although I'm sure Henry wasn't on the team all year both years). Dear all,
I added a picture of Mathewson's grave, located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. I took this last week (10 June 2011). If you agree that a better picture is warranted, please post and I will head out to the cemetery and take another picture. Also buried here are his wife, Jane S. Mathewson, and son, Christopher Jr.
This is a picture of only his stone - I can snap a photo of the whole plot, with the Mathewson family stone in the picture as well, if desired.

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Christy Mathewson2.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on August 12, 2012. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2012-08-12. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :) Thanks! — howcheng { chat} 06:02, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
It puzzles me why Matty is listed in the category People from Honesdale, Pennsylvania. He is not from there nor did he ever live there. He played for a team based there. By that logic, he should also be in People from New York City and People from Cincinnati. → Michael J Ⓣ Ⓒ Ⓜ 03:58, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

"In fact, he is the only professional pitcher in history to rank in the top 10 both in career wins and career ERA, if taking 19th-century pitchers' statistics into account.[2] Otherwise, both Mathewson and Walter Johnson would hold that distinction."
How can he be the only one, if Walter Johnson also holds that distinction. It doesn't say only 19th century pitcher, it specifically states only professional pitcher
"if taking 19th-century pitchers' statistics into account" adds to the number, does not make exclusive. 56.0.84.25 ( talk) 13:46, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

Does anyone have any links to the WWI chemical corps training manual or policies? Or just the gas incident? It seems absolutely insane they were training with live gases, especially since phosgene was invisible and undetectable by humans until fatal exposure had already happened. Mustard gas would cause disfiguring blisters externally if skin contact was made. We had the chemical ability at the time to produce heavier than air colored gas that was harmless and useful as a training measure, why was that not used at least in training the very public faces of the biggest sport and national past time- baseball was significantly bigger at the turn of the 20th century than at its end. If Cobb and Matthewson were killed in training the recruitment and enthusiasm for the war would have dried up overnight. Who would want to fight for a government that killed its biggest celebrities in negligence?
I know we used to be very stupid about these sorts of things but it seems almost too crazy knowing what they did about chemical warfare. Ba18070 ( talk) 00:04, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
