The anecdote for the Chalks' purchase of the ring is a little odd. Queen Elizabeth's state dinners at the White House were in 1951 (as Princess), 1957 (as Queen of Canada) and then nothing til the Bicentennial in 1976. The wording is "a dinner in her honor" and '62 would be the tenth anniversary of her accession so maybe she wasn't actually present. But then the story about turning the ring so as not to upstage her doesn't work. The story is sourced; I'm just not sure it's *true*.
