Missing quote or citation or reference?
The two numbered bullet points after "Behind this are two beliefs, at the time widespread:" read as though they are a quote from a contemporary or at least near-contemporary source. They are partly in present tense and use a perspective that seems incongruent with current diction around these topics. There are citations within the body of bullet point 2 but it's not clear if they apply to the entire paragraph or not.
