Camp Garcia was closed on the island of Vieques after some protests and really bad press. The island was more than a jungle airstrip . It was used as a impact area for years were everthing you can think of was dropped on it . There are still unecploder bombs buried in the jungle . It is a super fund clean up site do to the toxic chemicals used on the base. The reason for the Wild life reserve is to keep people out of the worst toxic areas . The base should have been put on the PACT act list of sites . The personnel stationed there were exposed to a variety of toxic chemicals .
