Mr Tinubu who is seeking the highest office of the land decided to celebrate his 69th birthday. But people started doing the math and it wasn't adding up. His first Daughter is currently 54 years old. So that would mean that he had her when he was just 15 years of age. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.95.148.119 ( talk) 23:40, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

Please change the following statement under the Governor of Lagos State section, "When he assumed office in May 1999, Tinubu promised 10,000 housing units for the poor with little achieved" to "When he assumed office in May 1999, Tinubu provided multiple housing units in Lagos for the poor". The cited source used for reference in that line is based on the conjecture of the author of the article and is not a statement of fact. The first sentence of the second paragraph needs to be changed.
The sentence currently reads: "Tinubu spent his early life in southwestern Nigeria and later moved to United States where he studied Accounting at Chicago State University."
The sentence needs to have the word "the" before "United States."
The sentence should actually read like this: "Tinubu spent his early life in southwestern Nigeria and later moved to the United States where he studied Accounting at Chicago State University." Bgp53 ( talk) 11:09, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
This article has a number of issues. First, it includes many statements which lack citations to enable verification; some seem little more than casual hearsay, many are irrelevant. Second, the lead is poorly organised. Third, the article itself has poorly organised sections; in particular the elements covering the subject's life before his successful presidential run. I will make some edits myself over time. Perhaps other editors can do the same over time?
I will make a note here each time I make an edit, for now on the basis of WP:BRD. If other editors engage, I'll make my proposals here before editing. I encourage other editors to do the same. Bola Tinubu is an important world figure now and this article should be of a high standard. I am conscious that he will have many supporters and detractors; I am not Nigerian and have no personal interest. I hope we are able to improve this article through the application of Wikipedia policies. All the best, Emmentalist ( talk) 10:22, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
I have tidied up the first para. The second two paras of the lead are quite seriously flawed; there are many claims with no citations. The content also seems quite random. I will leave the second two paras for now and move on to the main body, then come back and tidy up the lead. Other editors might well want to contribute in the meantime and I'll take those new edits into account when I improve the lead. Emmentalist ( talk) 10:33, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
I have edited this section to include a reliable source and exclude hearsay and unreliable sources. It is now quite short and there is clearly a need for more biographical detail; if other editors wish to put material back in, please ensure that it is supported by reliable sources. My own view is that a liberal position should be taken on Nigerian newspaper sources since it is very hard to fill out the biographical detail by relying on modest coverage in conventional sources, but inclusion should be taken on a case by case basis depending on the refernced report itself. Nigerian political websites should not be used as sources. Emmentalist ( talk) 13:04, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
I have tidied up and removed material not supported by citations.
I have tidied up and removed material not supported by citations. I have left quite a bit of material in which is supported by relatively weak sources. However, I do not wish to over-edit content inserted in good faith by Nigerians - much of it is likely accurate. I feel that Nigerian editors could improve here.
I have edited this part very lightly and left in some content where a citation is required. The content is, to my own limited knowledge by other means, correct. Perhaps Nigerian editors can find appropriate source/s? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emmentalist ( talk • contribs) 08:23, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
I have left this section untouched. There is room for more relevant content, imho. Emmentalist
I have removed this section altogether. In general, 'controversies' sections in biographies are a lazy way of including material which should, if relevant, be included in earlier sections. They often include non WP:NPOV material too, or material presented in a non WP:NPOV way. Both applied in this case, imho. Moreover, some of the material was either petty, outdated or poorly sourced. I am not suggesting that none of the material does not belong in the article; but I urge editors who might consider re-insterting the material to do so in the main section and only where supported by solid sources. Emmentalist ( talk) 08:54, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
I have merged these sections and otherwise have made no other edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emmentalist ( talk • contribs) 08:57, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
I have returned to the lead and tidied it up. The lead was partly referenced and partly not, so for consistency I have removed references and tried to ensure that the content is referenced in the main body. I have also removed some content which is covered in the main body. The size of the lead looks proportionate now, imho, although it may increase as the content expands during Tinubu's presidency.
I've finished my edit, as laid out above, and feel it is now appropriate to remove the tags. The article is better structured and poorly referenced material, including material not WP:NPOV, has been removed. The article is not perfect, but it is a decent base for development now. The subject will no doubt justify many additions as his presidency progresses. I have taken a liberal line on Nigerian media references which might not otherwise pass muster. This is because I am conscious that while the Nigerian media varies enormously in quality, sometimes in the same publication, articles do often report fairly widely known facts which are not picked up by regular good quality Wikipedia media sources. I am conscious that WP:Reliable Sources is heavily biased (in the statistical sense) to Western/Northern sources and feel that Nigerian editors are often best placed to take articles/sources on a case by case basis. I will not edit further as other editors improve the content (I hope Nigerian editors); I will look in again in a while. Perhaps I should conclude by saying that I think there is a place in an article like this for an editor not close to the subject (I am not Nigerian although I do have experience of Nigeria, if I may put it that way) to help improve the broad structure and style of the article, and perhaps help adjudicate content, those best placed to edit this article are certainly Nigerians living in Nigeria. Finally, finally, I would ask non-Nigerian editors not to automatically delete material which is not sourced from the WP:Reliable Sources list, but rather to judge each case on its merits. There are many decent journalists working in Nigeria, reporting without fear or favour; it's a matter of looking carefully at each source and sourced article and making a judgement (in discussion with other editors wherever possible). Anyway, enough from me. All the best, Emmentalist ( talk) 13:37, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
This section had been edited out because it is badly structured, poorly referenced and far from WP:NPOV. It's been replaced in full. It would be helpful if a third opinion were given.
In respect of each sub-section:
1. Illegal operation of foreign accounts: This section notes that the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) considered a complaint against Tinubu in 2007. There is no reference to the outcome. The complaint may have been wholly rejected. The use of "trial" (the CCB is not a court), in the absence of any supporting information about the function and role of the CCB, seems misplaced and designedly pejorative. It is common for governments and oppositions, in Nigeria and elsewhere, to raise complaints about political opponents with public bodies with political intent. Without any further citations to justify why and in what way this episode can reasonably be considered a "controversy", this sub-section gives the appearance of an attempt to smear the subject of the article.
2. Appropriation of Lagos Funds This section again has a pejorative title, yet notes that after a different complaint was levelled at Tinubu, he was entirely cleared. The central part of this section involves events unrelated to the title (and why is it 'controversial' that a plot to murder Tinubu may have existed?).
3. Political godfatherism and hooliganism This section again has a pejorative title and notes; "his role...was exposed" in a documentary. In fact, it's clear from the section that when Tinubu took action against the documentary makers, the documentary was immediately withdrawn. This, of itself, suggests quite the opposite of an exposure of wrong doing. The rest of this section is just gossip with no 'controversial' implications at all.
4. Use of bullion vans to influence elections Again pejorative, this section simply alleges that a security vehicle was once seen parked outside Tinubu's house. The section urges the reader, in effect, to infer that Tinubu was bribing people using money contained in the vehicle. But there is literally no justification for this implied criticism. There was no action by any agency whatever. If we are to infer anything from reports that a security vehicle was seen outside Tinubu's house, it would be that political opponents will have brought this to the attention of the relevant authorities who would have provided comment and perhaps an investigation. The lack of any reference to any evidence or subsequent action gives the strong impression that this section, like the others, are included here by political opponents.
I will leave others to judge whether this section should still be in, but at present I must say that I am disappointed that a fair effort to improve an article should lead to the immediate and crude re-insertion of some of the article's weaknesses, and without discussion here at that. 2A00:23C5:6429:601:DE9:615A:DEE6:95C3 ( talk) 17:46, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
Response to third opinion request: |
I have changed the heading of the section per WP:NOCRIT. Headings like "controversies" attract unnecessary one-sided POV additions thus we need to avoid that. As for the specific sub-sections, I think they should be discussed in accordance with WP:NPOV and WP:DUE because we can think of any conclusion. Capitals00 ( talk) 00:10, 15 March 2023 (UTC) |

Editor Morbidthoughts replaced citations regarding Bola Tinubu's drug-related money forfeiture in the US. The reason is stated as "inappropriate source for BLP". The Editor substituted the references with a BBC coverage which barely mentions the forfeiture. This is not a good-faith substitution. I'd like to suggest that, even if we accept the premise of the substitution and consider it done it good faith, there is a more credible, reliable, established and well-regarded replacement - https://saharareporters.com/2008/09/15/how-us-federal-agents-succesfully-linked-bola-tinubu-drug-trafficking-ring-chicago.

I would like to bring to your attention a potential inaccuracy in the article regarding President Tinubu. The current statement, "His government having cleared the legal hurdles of the opposition following the March election is generally accepted unopposed and has international legitimacy," appears to be misleading.
Contrary to this statement, the legality of his government following the March election is still being challenged in the PEPT court (Presidential Election Petition Tribunal) by opposition parties. There is strong evidence to support these challenges, indicating that legal hurdles have not yet been cleared.
I kindly request that the statement be reviewed and, if necessary, revised to accurately reflect the ongoing legal challenges and the fact that the government's legitimacy is currently subject to dispute.
I do not know how to cite sources here but any body reviewing my edit request can kindly tell me how to do it or check PEPT Case Nigeria and see for themselves

Hello,
I will want to edit this bit: "Chief Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu GCFR (born 29 March 1952) is a Nigerian politician who is the 16th and current president of Nigeria"
The name Adekunle added to Bola Ahmed Tinubu's name is wrong and one of many fictitious names he bears. There has just been a concluded court case for the presidential elections and the name Adekunle was on his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate submitted to the court. This is the only certificate that bears such a name. The certificate itself is contentious as he had obtained it stating the NYSC had granted him an exemption for service (something that did not exist at the time he supposedly served).
The name A had also been contentious and was believed to be the initials for "Adekunle" in his NYSC certificate. The man known as Bola Ahmed Tinubu has always gone by the name Ahmed and never Adekunle. Also, there has been a disposition with the Chicago State University ( [1]) and the school has proven under oath they cannot verify if as a matter of fact, the man who is the Nigerian president had, in fact, attended the school and also proven that he had forged the certificate he had used to run for office in 2023.
The world is being lied to about his identity and Wikipedia is known to uphold a certain threshold for the veracity of the information it holds. I would love to strike the name Adekunle out. It is not his name and the circumstances in which the name is being added is an insult to Nigerians and the people who will be reading to the man who had no discernable and traceable record until the age of 21. He has lied about his primary and secondary school education. This is proved by the documentation recovered under oath from CSU and one of the certificates used to obtain admission showed that he had attended the Lagos Government College and had graduated in the year 1970. The thing is, the school was founded in 1974.
It would be my utmost pleasure to set the records straight for a crooked history. Philipigbeka ( talk) 16:50, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
