The term 'black water' arose because that is the name given to effluent pumped out of a ship's heads (toilets), i.e., raw sewage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.7.147.13 ( talk) 14:22, 27 October 2012 (UTC) reply

Very simple. One of the effects is to release haemoglobin into the urine, which makes it very dark. Hence Black-Water

Another cultural reference

In "A Message from Charity", one of the episodes of the "new" series of "Twilight Zone", a 20th century male victim of the disease manages to "telepathically" contact a much earlier (17th or thereabouts century) female victim who lived in the same area, and they have a sort of "cross-temporal" romance with much drama. The delirium aspect of the disease is very important to the plot of the story. In my POV, this was a very good episode. Old_Wombat ( talk) 07:10, 26 October 2011 (UTC) reply
