The original author of this article mentioned the "Daily Oklahoman", specifically issues from 1977-1980 and 1999. I can't find any full-text references in the Daily Oklahoman, but a search for "Baptist AND sex change" in the archives of The Oklahoman yields the following probably-relevant headlines:
"Sex Change Operations at Baptist Stopped Pending Review" (16 September 1977)
"Move Looms to Ban Sex Change Surgery at Baptist" (21 September 1977)
"Ban Looms" (21 September 1977)
"Sex Surgery a Life-Saver, Joanna says" (22 September 1977)
"Sex Surgery Deliberation Kept Secret" (7 October 1977)
"Doctors Defend Sex Change Surgery, Ask for Support" (12 October 1977)
"Sex Change Surgery Banned at Baptist" (15 October 1977)
"Sex Change Surgeons to Move to University Hospital" (18 October 1977)
"Sex Change Study Starts" (26 October 1977)
"University Hospital Likely to Accept Sex Change Surgeon" (6 December 1977)
"Doctor OK'd To Practice Sex Changes" (7 December 1977)
"Team Raising Pace of Sex Change Surgery to End Backlog Caused by Fuss" (8 December 1977)
"Reynolds Doctor Doctor" or something like that (paper damaged) (19 February 1978)
"Baptist Hospital Gets New Owners" (17 June 1978)
"Sex Switch Operations Are Halted" (25 January 1981)
"Last State Hospital Performing Sex-Changes Stops Surgery" (25 January 1981)

spelling of Dr. David's family name?
Article has three spellings of Dr F's family name: "Foerstler", "Foerester" and "Foerster". First saw the article a few minutes ago so I don't know which spelling is correct. --
