I have heard that in Medieval times, people would consume wine and perform some rituals in order to recieve information from the spirits. I vaguely remember something about Court Jesters doing this as part of their repetoire. I believe the "Song of my Soul" by Cris Williamson expresses some of this. Can someone more knowledgeable than me verify the pronunciation provided. Doesn't seem to match the wiktionary pronunciation from the link within the article
