The pants of Paul
I see the scruffs "raided his closet for a pair of pants which they took turns wearing". To a Brit this means the girls took turns wearing his underpants! As far as Paul is concerned they would have raided his
wardrobe for a pair of
trousers, so I propose to substitute those words, if I'm right in thinking this would not detract for readers of other nationalities.

Actually it has been
pointed out to me that the recording of "Across the Universe" predates the formation of Apple and the opening of their Savile Row headquarters by a few months, so calling the girls "Apple Scruffs" would be inaccurate.--
