There is a NYT review of a book by his wife, Christa Parravani, here: [1]. The review paints an extremely unflattering portrait of Swofford, in particular his reaction to his wife's pregnancy and how she appears to support him financially. Without having read the book or Parravani's prior memoirs, it's difficut to sort out how much is true; how much is his wife's version of events which may be colored or even enhanced for publication; and how much is the reviewer's inference. There is at least one incident reccounted in the book that is verfiably made up. The story about the marine who's wife sends him a video-tape and edits footage of herself having sex with the neighbor is a well documented urban legend. (See Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/military/videobye.asp ). In light of the allegations of making stuff up that have been leveled at other memoirists, are there other elements of this book that can not be documented, or rather can be shown to be false? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.73.106.65 ( talk) 01:17, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

I had a class from Swofford at Lewis & Clark, where he was a visiting adjunct professor for one year (from Fall 2002 to Spring 2003, during which period Jarhead was released). I know that after that, he left to teach at Saint Mary's, so that much jibes, and I do know that he had the MFA from the Writer's Workshop, though I can't confirm his earlier education.

I spoke with earlier School and no he was not a Professor he was there as a mid replacement for 3 months only once again he inflated his experience and basically lied. —Preceding

I was in a class with Tony in 1996 at American River College. I know he went there at least a year, probably three semesters (he was an editor of and contributor to the American River Literary Review, a very high caliber journal - for a community college ... http://english.arc.losrios.edu/review/ARLR.htm). He actually later attended Sacramento City College (1997) before transferring to UC Davis. He did indeed graduate with a BA in English at Davis before going on to the University of Iowa writer's workshop. (He did teach at Lewis and Clark first, then St. Mary's - 2003-04. He resigned St. Mary's after he sold the movie rights to Jarhead.)
Anyone have any idea how much money he received to make Jarhead a movie? 67.110.221.182 ( talk) 00:31, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Under return to civilian life, it says "Swofford returned to Harvard, doing a variety of jobs to pay his way." There is no mention of Harvard anywhere else, it makes no mention of him attending Harvard, and the interview referenced on the citation only mentions Harvard in one general, non-Swofford usage. Please clarify?
He should be ashamed of himself for what he did. My little brother is whose story he told, not his own. He is a farce and should be called out for who he is. William Louis Hobbick is the true US Marine who should be credited for this story. 2600:1700:DE80:21F0:CC9D:B22F:41F:8F57 ( talk) 01:35, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
