I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley in McAllen, and we were always told he sacrificed himself by jumping on a grenade and saving his fellow soldiers. Which is true?
Ha! Even more oddly, the Marines' who's-who page says he was killed by rocket fire, while this article says he was killed by gunfire. --
