Here's a link with a lot of good hits, some of them about the history behind the game.
[1]. I remember this game was huge in the 1980s. Every elementary school where I grew (Washington DC area) had it and was using it as a teaching aid for geography classes. Popular mechanics magazine also wrote an article at one point about it. It cost $30 in the mid 1980s as I remember...pretty steep for back then. On your original point, this article definitely needs expansion and more sources. -
