Is the ABS-CBN News image where a wiki image was used without credit necessary? Its a legit pic, but it is not necessary. I don't consider it encyclopedic, and more relevant pictures can be used for the News and Current Affairs portion.

Okay, while I'm aware of the copyvio tag, can the copyvio tagger answer why this article was tagged as a copyvio? If there is a basis, can the actual webpages be cited, instead of the whole ABS-CBN portal in general?--

Define "largest"
"...the largest Media company in the Philippines."
What is "largest?" Most number of stations? Most profitable? Biggest building? What? If no one comes up with an answer by the weekend it will be removed. --HowardtheDuck05:54, 15 August 2006 (UTC)reply
in terms of...nationwide and internatinoal reach. Still vague. "Largest" in terms of what? How do we measure that? In terms of viewers? Countries? Cities? Cable subscribers?
i think the corporate website of abs-cbn is already cited in the main page, and the corporate website says they are the largest. if you will check GMA's corporate website, they are not claiming that they are the largest. it is not vague, even GMA Network recognizes that. GMA is just the most profitable, and is leading in Mega-Manila. also, they have the highest asset value, and has more branches (if i can use the word), as evidenced by TFC, since its rival PTV is just new. Can i use the PSE website as example?
PSE infoJohn earlm13:41, 28 November 2006 (UTC)reply
Whoopss...haha! We were both editing this section at the same time. I realized that my statement was vague. I added something on it :) ---
Tito Pao13:43, 28 November 2006 (UTC)reply
i find this discussion as moot and unnecessary. i don't think we have to name all the aspects where ABS-CBN is considered being the largest. come to think of it, GMA is not the largest in any aspect we can think of, but they are the more profitable. industry observers, PSE website, and ABS-CBN people themselves consider the network as the largest network. if you are still not satisfied, you can research yourself. Another example is the
Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards and the
Mt. Everest team page, where the station is a sponsor. The articles about ABS-CBN consider them as the largest.
John earlm13:48, 28 November 2006 (UTC)reply
At least we're getting somewhere here. We're now getting somewhere from a vague "largest network" to "largest network in terms of ..." (so I suggest you make the appropriate edit and provide the references as you deem necessary). The point of this discussion is that when you make a statement as "the largest something", it should be specific...especially on the "largest" part.
"industry insiders, PSE and ABS-CBN people" may be obvious to us Filipinos---I should know, since I'm a Kapamilya ;) ---but keep in mind that Filipinos are not the only readers of Wikipedia. What is obvious for Pinoys may not be obvious for other readers in Wikipedia; how would someone from
Beijing or
London or
Johannesburg or
Sao Paolo know? Just because we said so? Or because we have something to show them to prove this? This is why I also raised the issue of naming your references (or, at least, by including other information that would make the statement self-supporting).
As for the part about "ABS-CBN people themselves consider the network as the largest network", I'm not sure. It reeks of
boosterism, and it's not quite healthy for an article that strives to have an
NPOV. We'd rather leave that for other people to say. ---
Tito Pao14:10, 28 November 2006 (UTC)reply
but even acceptable sources such as the PSE website do not give the specific aspects where ABS-CBN is large at. that must mean they are the largest in all aspects. like i said, it can attribute to the fact that ABS-CBN is the largest in all aspects we can think of. GMA is just the network that is the most profitable. even foreign entities (
1), (
2) consider ABS-CBN as the largest without specifying the aspect where it is large. We can just put the most credible article or reference, but if the most credible article does not detail where ABS-CBN is considered the largest, I say this discussion is moot.
John earlm14:19, 28 November 2006 (UTC)reply
Two things:
The Ernst and Young and the Mt. Everest write-ups read like they were written by the media handlers of ABS-CBN. I would also say the same for the other write-ups for the other sponsors (why else would Microsoft include its phone number on it? why else would PAL mention the model of their first airplane?)
The information from the SEC page was also written by ABS-CBN. That's because it's an annual document that they are required to submit to the SEC and are required to make public (you know, for investors). Although it's the SEC website, it's not written by SEC. ---
Tito Pao15:04, 28 November 2006 (UTC)reply
Then please find a source that you consider more credible. But the absence of a source that you consider sufficient should not refrain from labeling ABS-CBN as the largest network. Besides, I think SEC and PSE will not allow ABS-CBN to be called the largest if that's inaccurate. We are making a big deal out this, which we should not be. I don't even think that it is boosterism, especially because ABS-CBN is a listed company at the PSE, they have the responsibility to be fair in their financial data and standing. Maybe the interview by Yahoo! Business is enough.
article here. Even at the
CASBAA Convention 2006, it was mentioned that ABS-CBN is the largest Philippine Media network, and I don't think the handlers of the station had something to do with it. Even
CFO Asia (though the article is old). Local journalists also automatically label the station as such, example
here and
here. Even a local business print journalist dubbed GMA network as the second largest (
article here).Again, it's moot. If that still does not satisfy you, then please try to look for reference/s that you consider as more acceptable. Peace sir! :-)
John earlm16:09, 28 November 2006 (UTC)reply
(Reindent) IMHO, "largest" is too vague. I'd rather have separate facts for this, like
ABS-CBN is the first multimedia company listed at the PSE, has the widest reach in the Philippines most number of affiliate stations, its programs are broadcasted abroad on more cable carriers, etc. --HowardtheDuck07:06, 29 November 2006 (UTC)reply
I think looking at their annual reports and other company data will show that ABS-CBN has: the most assets, largest capitalization, most number of cable subscribers, most number of foreign affiliates, most number of local broadcast stations/regional bureaus, most number of viewers nationwide, and the most number of dedicated subsidiaries, which is what leads some writers (particularly those who write in the business pages of most dailies) to label ABS-CBN as the "largest." I agree that unless these things are clarified, then the statement "largest" is vague.
Rmcsamson11:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC)reply
I agree. These are the kind of things that I would consider as acceptable definitions of "largest", not necessarily "largest" because media handlers (like the anonymous authors of About Me blurbs at the corporate sponsors pages in various events) and newspaper writers (like the Inquirer and Yahoo) say so. Let's stick to something more quantifiable---and, of course, easily verifiable. (The revenue data alone is a good start; ABS-CBN undoubtedly beats GMA7 (to the tune of P12 billion vs. P8 billion). ---
Tito Pao15:23, 29 November 2006 (UTC)reply
I think the word "largest" also refers to the sheer size of the organization in terms of employment. Organizations commonly talk about their "size" based on their number of employees.
Rmcsamson07:49, 30 November 2006 (UTC)reply
We should avoid the use of "largest," the phrase "corporation with the most number of employees" is more straight to the point and clearer. --HowardtheDuck10:43, 30 November 2006 (UTC)reply
Huh? I think it's better to say "largest in terms of assets". At least it can cover the real and non-real assets, number of employees, as well as number of branches and international subscribers. What do you think?
John earlm16:05, 1 December 2006 (UTC)reply
That might still be vague, because largest could be applied for both tangible objects (e.g. fixed, physical assets) and intangible objects (money), and for both discrete (number of stations) and continuous units (number of viewers, which is almost always measured by the thousands or by the millions instead of by each individual person). Howard's proposal is better: in naming the superlative, name the specific category, to be concise and unambiguous. ---
Tito Pao16:26, 1 December 2006 (UTC)reply
You know what, we should avoid first-party sources and use third-party sources which aren't press releases or written by PR people of these companies themselves. So the question now is how to reword it. "Largest" does mean many things... like fattest employees, largest land area, etc. --HowardtheDuck06:19, 2 January 2007 (UTC)reply

Comment. This article is about ABS-CBN, not about Eugenio Lopez, Sr., or about the coffee table book. Even though EL Sr. played a vital part in the history of the company, this is not within the ambit of the article...otherwise, we might as well rewrite this article to make it read like the life story of the Eugenio family. The section about the coffee table book is better suited on a separate article (a bio) about EL Sr. ---

Star Cinema is totally a different entity as far as ABS-CBN is concern. Star Cinema, which has a corporate name of ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc (and with a trade name of Star Cinema), is ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation's film-production outfit. Both companies are member of the

ABS-CBN legal controversies/issues
Just heard in the news yesterday that ABS-CBN is yet again involved in another legal controversy where their news vehicle/driver accidently hit/ran over an old poor bystander in a provincial carinderia (can't remember exactly where). Currently, the culprit is detained and refused to give any statements. On the other hand, the network extended their sympathy and financial condolences to the relatives of this poor woman. Can anyone include this and its details (cite)? thanks!

exactly why is the legal decision about unlawful termination noteable? On it's own a company being successfully sued isn't very notable unless it's an indication of long standing issues in the company or if the people why were terminated were in themselves notable. The way it's stated now really just seems like an example of
Recentism. Perhaps some expansion of the background behind the firings or something of that sort would help.

Programing Directory
Wikipedia is not a directory and Wikipedia articles are not Directories, directory entries or a
electronic program guide. For example, an article on a radio or TV station should not list current program schedules, stations, etc. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia (
Not a directory), so many "useful" things that do not belong in an encyclopedia are excluded and removed.--

However Hu12 isn't qouteing the entire statement which goes on to say " although mention of major events, promotions or historically significant programme lists and schedules (such as the annual United States network television schedules) may be acceptable" which means that annual tv schedules are ok. June 4, 2008 launched the
flagship program of its celebrations for its 55th year in television. "Bayanijuan," with the theme “Walang Iwanan sa Bayan Ni Juan” defines the Filipino volunteer spirit for ourselves and our children. Jacinto at Del Pilar, 19 noong sumali sa Katipunan, Bigyan ng bagong simula ang ating bayan…BAYANIJUAN.” The national lunch will be on
Independence Day,
June 12, with a patriotic pledge, and joint ABS-CBN employees special Flag Ceremony, followed by the"Bayanijuan"campaign (institutional TV plugs featuring the likes of Piolo Pascual, KC Concepcion, Sarah Geronimo, and the hosts of Bandila and TV Patrol Weekend). A
music video for the "Bayanijuan" theme song “Bagong Simula” was produced, featuring Kevin Roy (Razorback), Marc Abaya (Kjwan), Yael Yuzon (Spongecola), Kitchie Nadal and Yeng Constantino.

Logo
Why is the logo uploaded here in Wikipedia incorporates a gray background/box? The official logo introduced in 2000 does not have a gray background. It is just a common misconception to the viewer of
ABS-CBN (the network) since the logo that is currently used is inside a white box only because of the reason that the logo would be difficult to display without the white box. White, not gray. ---
