Believe I may be able to help on this, I'm a student at the
University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, which is a post 1992 University in Cardiff (a
'new' university). Before this it was a polytechnic college, and I believe in the timespan talked about (1946 - 1972), the current campuses were separate colleges.
Cardiff University is older, and has undergone sevaral name changes over the years, including University of Wales College, Cardiff and University of Wales, Cardiff, so confusion is understandable and often! The university that you refer to must be what is now Cardiff University.
