– The two main sources used by these articles (Baseball Reference and Baseball Almanac) refer to the team as "Pittsburgh Alleghenys". The name specified in the team's 1882 corporate charter is the Allegheny Base Ball Club of Pittsburgh (including the final "h" in Pittsburgh), for which "Pittsburgh Alleghenys" is a modern-style equivalent. A Google search for "pittsburgh alleghenys" -wikipedia returned hit estimates of 44,600 (web), 2040 (books), and 67 (Scholar), compared to "pittsburg alleghenys" -wikipedia which returned 26,200 (web); 111 (books), and 3 (Scholar).

Support moves. The team's rename from Alleghenys to Pirates happened to coincide with the city's rename from Pittsburgh to Pittsburg, so at no point would the team be reasonably referred to as the Pittsburg Alleghenys. Also support moving all Pittsburg Pirates seasons to Pittsburgh Pirates, because modern-day sources consistently use the H even when referencing those twenty-one years.
