It is a former GA. Overall, I think the article is pretty good - I think it would be a GA/FA if it wasn't so popular/controversial and thus a turf war for various pro/anti Christian wiki factions. I think the article is good enough for our portal. One way or another, here's the link to bio blurb for the portal:

Fine, I think we can say it's a reasonable exception. I just hope it won't set a precedent. I rewrote the blurb though. The article is quite bad actually; it focuses on facts from the pope's life, but the Teachings section is tiny (and the linked main article is start class only).
Christian humanism, which was the basis of Wojtyła's philosophy, is not mentioned in the article at all (it does say he taught Christianity which is a little too abvious). —
