The Battle of Paoli (also known as the Battle of Paoli Tavern or the Paoli Massacre) was part of the Philadelphia campaign of the American Revolutionary War fought on September 21, 1777, in the area surrounding present-day Malvern,
Pennsylvania.
^Major General Benjamin Lincoln was sent to the Northern Army earlier in 1777, so Wayne, commanding the 1st Brigade, assumed command.
^Brigadier General Philip De Haas was assigned to command this brigade but never assumed command and soon resigned his commission after his February 1777 commission.
