The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival (formerly known as the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival) is organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image, which was founded by a group of Indian film industry stalwarts in 1997 and was conceived and created with the aim to "engage film lovers from all walks of life, and to foster an ideal climate of good cinema across the country by presenting the best of global and Indian cinema". The Academy’s vision is to celebrate cinema by hosting the annual international film festival in Mumbai, India's film and entertainment capital.
Over the course of its history, the festival has been host to film talent such as Fernando Meirelles, Ari Aster, Darren Aronofsky, Ava DuVernay, Sean Baker, John Madden and Lucrecia Martel. The festival programmes Indian and international films, and also maintains the Year Round Programme, under which MAMI holds screenings and talks throughout the year (physical and virtual).
The 2020 edition of the festival was postponed to 2021 [1] due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but was eventually cancelled. [2] The 22nd edition was held exclusively online in February and March of 2022. [3]
The festival returned as a 10-day physical event in October and November 2023. [4] The Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023 introduced the South Asia Competition, inviting films from filmmakers of South Asia (with the exception of Pakistan) and the South Asian diaspora. Over 250 films were screened during this edition of the festival, with the opening film being Hansal Mehta's The Buckingham Murders and the closing film being Sofia Coppola's Priscilla. [5]
The upcoming edition of the festival is scheduled for 19th to 24th October 2024. [6]
