Lake Nakivale is a lake in the Western part of Uganda. It is part of the Lake Mburo-Nakivale wetland system. It is located 6km in the western part of Isingiro town. This lake also serves as one of the main water supplies for the district of Isingiro. [1] [2]
Formation
Lake Nakivale was formed as a result of the 1999 El-Nino rains. The lake derives its name from emikinga trees that are found in the wetland where the lake was formed in Isingiro District. [3]
Ecology
Lake Nakivale a home to a variety of bird species. A number of Afro-tropical and Palearctic migrant species visit the area during adverse weather species. Shoebill storks and papyrus yellow warblers are present. The lake also contains two endangered species of cichlids that have disappeared from larger neighboring lakes. [4]
