U.S.S. Benevolence was commissioned in 1945 as a hospital ship with 802 beds. It served in the Pacific off the coast of Japan after the end of the war, and then returned to the San Francisco Bay as a casualty evacuation ship. On August 25, 1950, Benevolence collided with the freighter S.S. Mary Luckenbach in heavy fog and sank off of San Francisco. 23 crew members were lost and 505 survived.
