School kids showing off their classroom and lessons at a rural school in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu.
Rather than building parallel schools, Hand in Hand supports the existing mainstream government schools like this one with additional teachers (the student-teacher ratio can be as high as 80:1), extra learning resources, nutrition programs and improving community involvement in the school with Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs).
Improving the education in existing schools is important in ensuring all children get a quality education and retaining school-going children, particularly who were previously in child labour, from dropping out.
