Joachim II. portraited almost life-size in half-length figure is looking at the viewer. Over his sumptuous robe he wears a fur waist-coat. The sable hat is decorated with the Christ monogram ihs, and Joachim holds a rosary in his left and a glove in his right hand. In this portrait Joachim appears older compared with the Perini portrait.
In 1563, Joachim II declared his Lutheran profession of faith, but the rosary in this portrait suggests he is not a Protestant. In 1569, following negotiations with his brother-in-law, the Polish King
Sigismund II Augustus, Joachim was co-enfoeffed with the
Duchy of Prussia. The striking fur hat worn by Joachim has been interpreted by some researchers as a Polish item of apparel possibly intended to manifest his close connection with the Polish throne.
