Jan Tilens verbrachte seine Kariere als Maler in Antwerpen. Es ist unbekannt, bei wem er seine Ausbildung erhalten hat, er wurde aber 1612/13 Mitglied der Lukasgilde. Er kollaborierte mit Malern wie Frans Francken II (siehe „Landschaft mit Europa und Zeus“, Staatsgalerie Aschaffenburg) sowie Hendrick van Balen und Hans Jordaens III.
