Français : "Au Salon de 1783, dans le palais du Louvre, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun présenta un portrait de la reine Marie-Antoinette qui choqua tellement qu’elle dut le remplacer par un autre portrait : le modèle portait la " gaulle ", une robe de mousseline légère réservée à l’intimité. Vigée Le Brun peignit alors très rapidement un second portrait pour l'exposer avant la fin du Salon, où elle habilla cette fois la reine d'une robe classique, de soie bleu-gris (MV 3893). Comme le portrait de Marie-Antoinette en gaulle, celui de sa belle-sœur la comtesse de Provence dans la même tenue, exposé au même moment, fut également jugé déplacé.
Pièce de dessous, la chemise était normalement cachée sous une robe. On l’utilisait également pour dormir : elle était alors coupée très ample pour plus de confort. Quand au début des années 1780 elle fut adaptée en robe, elle était réservée à l’intérieur et aux promenades d’été. Dehors, elle était volontiers associée au chapeau de paille, rond et assez plat, orné de fruits et fleurs artificiels, de dentelle de paille ou de rubans."
